Giant is bigger than just DC area. They are a PA company with i think some kind a south of the mason dixon affiliate. It’s a great store but shop-rite has cheaper name brands. before covid you never stood in a line. they would open up registers and move you thru. The issue is the urban areas that do not enforce theft laws. not a food store problem.

Stores will need to go to the Costco and Sam's Club model where you need to be a member to enter. If you steal anything, they charge your credit card, revoke your membership, and if you ever show up again, you're arrested for criminal trespass.

To survive, these stores are going to have to go to a kiosk mode.

Kiosks for users without computers or network access. Loyal patrons of the store can login to their account, shop for what they want, pay, then come to the counter to pickup. A QR code on their account provides quick scan access to the paid and fulfilled transaction.
