WASHINGTON, Sept 5 (Reuters) - A former chairman of the right-wing Proud Boys group was sentenced on Tuesday to 22 years in prison for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump trying to overturn the former president's election defeat.
Enrique Tarrio was convicted of charges, including seditious conspiracy, for his role in planning the storming of the Capitol, when thousands of supporters of the Republican then-U.S. president violently tried to stop Congress from certifying the results of an election that Trump falsely claimed had widespread fraud.
Federal prosecutors had asked U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly to impose a 33-year prison sentence on Tarrio, who was not present at the Capitol on the day of the violence because another judge had ordered him to stay out of Washington. Prosecutors said he helped direct the attack from Baltimore.
Tarrio's attorneys had asked for a substantially shorter sentence.
Kelly last week sentenced another far-right Proud Boys leader, Ethan Nordean, to 18 years, less than the 27 years prosecutors had sought. Oath Keepers militia founder Stewart Rhodes in May was also sentenced to 18 years. Nordean and Rhodes had previously been tied for the longest sentence handed down in the case.
More than 1,100 people have been arrested on charges related to the Capitol assault, and of those at least 630 have pleaded guilty and at least 110 have been convicted at trial. Five people, including a police officer, died during or shortly after the riot and more than 140 police officers were injured. The Capitol suffered millions of dollars in damage.

He wasn’t even there! Yet 22 years. I agree with another reply here. This is to discourage conservative protestors. But we need to have a mass protest of the media. The way this Rueter’s story is written shows just how they are not doing their job. Yeah. The protest could even be themed towards telling the media to do their damn job!
This is to send a message to all of us.
What exactly did he do?
Calling them “pride boys” tells me that you know nothing about this group. Best to keep quiet, then, rather than to show yourself an ignorant fool.
The clown "justice" system strikes again.
They've got something on him, which is why they put him where he is.
The three male P.R. terrorists each got 75 years. The one female, 50 years.
I hope you’re still in Tokyo, you sure don’t belong here.
I won’t bother citing a few dozen vicious rapists, child abductor pedophiles and multiple murderers who got lighter sentences after conviction bargaining such as telling where victims were buried.
Jimmy Carter pardoned them IIRC.
Good point. Most of them were killed. The White Rose worked only from the perspective of the long game, and even then only after some of them escaped to the Allies so the Allies could drop their leaflets over Germany. If protesting the Dims doesn't work in the short term and results in more and more persecution -- who will be our allies we can turn to?
The answer is not allies plural, but Ally singular, and that's the Lord. Without the Lord we have nothing, including sanity in our country. But with the Lord we've got it going on.
I am becoming more afraid each day that President Trump is doomed if this is what is passing for justice here and now. The skids are being well greased.
Our tyrannical leaders need to be reminded of just what the 2nd amendment was for, to maintain a free state.
here are three current news stories regarding sentencing of persons convicted of manslaughter (I picked the first three; a valid study would have a minimum of thirty):
10 years

24 years
life
Based on my admittedly small sample, sentencing for manslaughter ranges. Sometimes less than 22 years. Sometimes more.
Come live or stuff your nonsense. Ex- Patriot.
These are unconscionable gulag persecutions.
If/when DJT wins next year, there should be Presidential pardons + expungements all around.
Correct. While there were some assaults on police, even aggravated assaults, the death of this police officer was due to a heart attack after the riot.
Here’s an example of a capitol hill police officer killed by an assault (in this case, vehicular assault). The attacker was a Black Muslim and was shot and killed by the police while attacking them with a knife.
Absolutely outrageous and just one more example that screams our government is under enemy occupation.
yep! murderers get slaps on the wrist all day long, but these poor protesters get 20+ years! it is a complete miscarriage of justice and every single republican leader should be marching in the streets to stop this.
“ Yet GOP “leaders” do nothing about it”
That infuriates me.
