I moved to Austin 35 years ago. At that time the culture was “cosmic cowboy.” IOW, laid back for sure but still recognizably Texan. It now has a generic west coast culture with nothing unique or creative to offer. Fortunately, we live outside the city limits.

San Francisco and Austin are also known for other, similar things. The contrast is more shocking, as it’s only a 3 hour drive from Houston which even as a blue city, is still America. Austin is way over the line.
