Most of the young men thought they were fighting for their country.
Were they fools? For sure.
But—I would bet well under 50% were true sociopaths.

True in many cases. But by 1943 the SS was drafting men into its ranks.
So who knows? This old German might have been a draftee.
You forget how indoctrinated these kids were through the Hitler Youth programs.
They were drilled into their skulls full of mush the Nazi program.
And none of it mentioned killing Jews or anyone else. These misguided teenagers believed their fight was to protect the homeland and fight bolshevism.
Go on tube and look for “WW2 stories”
It gives a perspective of the average German soldiers and a few of Soviet soldiers. It’s quite interesting.
There was no opposition opinion allowed and no media that wasn’t piping out the Nazi sludge.
