More than 1,700 students from Lahaina public schools have not enrolled since the wildfire

The state Department of Education estimates that out of the nearly 3,000 students who were enrolled at four Lahaina public schools prior to the Aug. 8 wildfire, 1,757 of them have not enrolled in another public school or opted for distance learning.

Department officials tell Maui Now that of the more than 1,700 outstanding students, some may have moved out of state, enrolled in private schools, or have taken a pause while they await the reopening of their Lahaina campus. The number has shrunk from 2,000 last week, “and so it’s been shrinking because more kids keep enrolling in our other schools or distance learning,” said Department spokesperson Nanea Kalani.

While the Kamehameha III Elementary campus was damaged beyond repair, the three other campuses serving west side students—Princess Nāhi‘ena‘ena Elementary, Lahaina Intermediate and Lahainaluna High—are expected to reopen after fall break in mid-October.

The campuses have been closed since the Aug. 8 wildfires as they undergo environmental assessments for air, water and soil quality, as well as ensuring stable power and sufficient broadband connectivity.

Kalani tells Maui Now that there is no timeline or mandate for students impacted by the wildfire event to enroll. “We know folks are in different places. We know that some are not ready to take advantage of the options available. We’re not forcing anybody. We’re highly encouraging them to enroll if they’re able to and they’re ready to, but we’re not mandating that they must enroll,” she said.

Of the 603 students previously enrolled at King Kamehameha III (Elementary) School, 154 have re-enrolled in other public schools, while 50 have enrolled in distance learning.

Of the 680 previously enrolled students at Princess Nāhi‘ena‘ena Elementary, 219 are enrolled in other public schools and 91 are in distance learning.

For Lahaina Intermediate, of the 647 previously enrolled students, 173 have enrolled at other public schools, and 103 are in distance learning.

There were 1,037 Lahainaluna High School student pre-fire. Of that number, 186 are re-enrolled at other public schools and 234 are in distance learning.

Last week, the Department of Education announced options for displaced students by designating Central and South Maui schools as temporary school sites.

The department announced the following temporary sites for students to return to learning environments with their teachers and peers to help facilitate the healing process and restore some sense of normalcy they await clearance for the Lahaina campuses to reopen.

What’s your take on how many of these children were sadly lost in the Lahaina firestorm?

How many of these are out of state now, how many are dead, and how many are part of families with more pressing concerns? Where are all the “social workers” to help sort this out?

Has the state ever announced how many bodies of children were found?

Why is the media is fixated on student enrollment? They are using it as a proxy to determine how many dead children there are. This is what happens when you have a state compliant media. They can’t do their real jobs - putting government officials under extreme scrutiny and demand answers to all questions related to the wildfire. That includes the number of dead.

Government isn’t going to give answers until something else distracts Americans. That will probably be another government caused crisis.

The democRATS roasted another group of children! They tend to do these human sacrifices each time they are in office. It’s the policies of the democRATS that result in deaths, both local political powers (poor infrastructure management) and national (wars for economic sake).

How about the students in the rolls pre-fire who never existed in the first place? Fictitious names to bump up the numbers to get mo’ money from the government.

Like Brandon with his disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, willful incompetence arguably constituting deliberate imperilment produces violence that claims scores or hundreds of innocent human souls.

I think fraud is at the bottom of all these discrepancies. The school district probably had fake student enrollments to increase their funding.

Now the numbers aren’t adding up.

This happens at every school in a fire area. If we had been paying attention, we would have seen this.

Yes, children died, but not 1700. The death toll has been at 115 for a couple of weeks now and they are nearly done searching. They are NOT going to find a place with 1700 incinerated children because it didn’t happen.

The names of the dead that they are releasing are mostly older, as is usually the case. The last time I looked, there were a handful of children, one young boy who died with his dog.

As for being unaccounted, people just leave. Many people are very traumatized by this type of experience and simply leave and notify no one. Again, it happens at every fire. It will be months before they track down everyone.

What’s the breakdown on possible deaths vs families just trying to cope with the loss of everything and re-enrolling kids is not a priority right now?

I don’t know, but there were way too many for anyone with a conscience to fathom. I can hear the death screams in my soul as I contemplate the horror. Just knowing beforehand that you are about to be burned alive - and not just burned but most being cremated into ashes is possibly the worst way to die. There is the story of a boy being found clutching his dog close to him in their death embrace.

The school district probably had fake student enrollments to increase their funding.

This has been the case in Democrat run cities for decades, and not just students but employees also.

When the new superintendent of Detroit Public School made everyone employed at the district come to his office and personally sign for a paycheck, over 400 "employees" never made it in.

Ghost employees, ghost students, a ruse perfected in everywhere from New Orleans to, it seems, Lahaina.
