In 13 Weeks, Ukraine Has Lost Just Five Of Its 71 Leopard 2 Tanks
Forbes ^ | August 28, 2023 | David Axe

In the 13 weeks since launching a long-anticipated counteroffensive along several axes in southern and eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian army has lost just five of its 71 Leopard 2 tanks.

Many more of the German-made tanks—at least 10—have suffered damage. But the Ukrainians are repairing the damaged tanks at depots in Poland and Germany and returning them to the front.

The fundamental toughness of the 69-ton Leopard 2 means tanks might take damage, visit a repair depot, return to the fighting then again take damage and head out for repairs. So on and so forth. The Leopard 2 lends itself to recycling.

More importantly, it’s possible almost every crew member in the five destroyed tanks—20 people in all—escaped their vehicle before it burned or exploded.

“Even the most critically damaged equipment is recovered and taken for repairs,” explained Ukrainian soldier Olexandr Solon'ko. “You can replace a piece of metal, even if it's expensive, but you can't repair a human life.”

A consortium of NATO countries including Canada, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden together have pledged to Ukraine 10 Strv 122s—Swedish-modified Leopard 2A5s—21 Leopard 2A6s and 74 Leopard 2A4s.

All of these tanks except 14 A4s already have arrived at the front line.

So why are we still giving Ukraine our hard-earned tax dollars and more military equipment then?

Because Russia is an existential threat to the U.S. Better to allow the Ukrainians fight them there now with our technology and support than having to do it ourselves, and at far greater cost, in a few years.

Did you miss out on the history of World War II in school?

Russia is jailing middle-aged Americans who peacefully protested a stolen election and pro-life activists?
Is Putin flooding our streets with Fentanyl and foreign invaders?
Our nation is circling the toilet.
You and your fellow travelers have warped priorities.

So I guess you missed the lessons about “appeasement,” the Anschluss, and the Sudetenland too.

The U.S. can walk and chew gum at the same time. Doing A (winning the upcoming elections) doesn’t mean we have to stop doing B (supporting Ukraine). We can decide each on its own merits. While there are limits, we can do several things simultaneously.

Why do we need to support Ukraine if the Europeans are supporting Ukraine?

NATO is an alliance of sovereign nations. Together, we are six times the size of Russia in population, and twenty times the size of Russia in population. If each member of the NATO alliance does its part to support Ukraine, the burden of supporting Ukraine on any member of NATO isn’t much.

I understand your point, but a better analogy is Russia’s aggression in eastern Europe during the period between the First and the Second World Wars (Finland, Poland, the Baltic states, Ukraine and the Caucuses). Putin sees himself as something like Catherine the Great (going further back in history) or Joseph Stalin, expanding Russia, not as Hitler expanding Germany.

German toughness
—————-
Just one look at modern day Germany, in recession, Islamists taken over ( especially the Düsseldorf region), out of control inflation, immigrants a large portion now a part of their population…..weak military, leftist leadership, aliens sucking up billions of the welfare payments,….weak, very weak….outlook poor.

The U.S. can walk and chew gum at the same time.

The U.S. can? So the Fentanyl, foreign invader, black urban crime, and inflation crisis are all being solved simultaneously to helping Ukraine, right?

Doing A (winning the upcoming elections) doesn’t mean we have to stop doing B (supporting Ukraine).

Tell me why do we need to support Ukraine. And please don't bring out the Putin scary costume, because we've already meddled in Ukraine in 2014 to install a puppet regime so corruption can go unchecked when, had we left them alone, none of what's taking place now would be happening.

We can decide each on its own merits. While there are limits, we can do several things simultaneously.

Look, I can see your cognitive dissonance from here in way out Northern Wisconsin. We have no business being in Ukraine other than preventing the Biden and Deep State corruption from coming out. That's why we're in Ukraine, to protect Biden and his cronies.

Russian definition of winning: (1) selling 40 percent of prewar level, (2) ruble is still worth a penny, and (3) only being pushed back slowly in Ukraine.

To paraphrase Homer Simpson, in Russia, vodka is the cause and the cure of every problem.

Is an existential threat to the US? Fight them there instead of here? This all sounds so familiar....

History is racist, so of course they did.

This current media maelstrom over Ukraine is remarkably like the USA in 1940, when the isolationists were receiving support and encouragement (in secret) from the Nazis. The arguments being thrown out aren't identical, but they rhyme.

I can sympathize with young people who are being taken in by this. During Vietnam I was barely 20, in college in Boston, and out of ignorance I swallowed the anti-American Party line. Then in my '30s I started reading.........

That is the same propaganda garbage they have been feeding us all along, that you have bought hook line & sinker, and continue to buy.

Provide proof that the headline is even accurate. Then provide why Russia is an existential threat to the U.S. In case I have missed something, I would say that the enemies from within present the much larger threat to freedom around the globe.

Of course, you wouldn't see that because you have been sold a pant load of BS designed to distract you from the real threat to this nation. Wake up.

The headlines even coming from the MSM lately, seen to paint a picture quite different than this being offered up.

But even you have changed your tune, because before it was always about Putin invaded Ukraine for a land grab. Now you claim that we are the target.

You finally have the right outcome desired, but still remain with the wrong bad guys as the perps.

Hi Extremist.

If you really believe that withdrawing from Ukraine will solve the problems you list, you have a fantastic imagination.

I suggest you focus on problems closer to home. You lost Wisconsin in the presidential race of 2020, you lost Wisconsin in the Governor race of 2022, and you lost the state Supreme Court earlier this year.

Stop that.

I sent money to good candidates in your state each of the past several elections. Not that I, personally, have anywhere like the resources of the NATO alliance. But, I am willing to help those who are doing what they can to help themselves, here in my state, elsewhere in this country, and elsewhere in world.

There a difference between be able to solve a crisis and actually wanting to do so. The left loves crisis...most of Americas issues are created by democratic policy.... the more people that need to depend on the federal govt the better for the left. War is just another manufactured crisis used to grease the wheels of the MIC. Horror and death 24/7 is okay with todays leftists. Its the fruit of their labor.

The German’s always made superior tanks... They just never made enough of them. During WW2 The Russian’s and American’s outdid them with numbers, not better tech.

We lost to voter fraud.

Anyway I have to get up and go to work now, because my tax dollars have to pay for Ukrainian propaganda apparently.
