As I was driving home tonight, I had the radio on listening to the Catholic station here in Phoenix (1310am).
The news came on and they reported that there are at least 400 dead in Maui and more likely upwards of 800-900 and that 40% of the dead are children. The given reason for the news blackout is that they are still trying to ID the bodies.
If for whatever reason, you needed to disappear, these events provide an excellent opportunity. If you are not white (i.e., brown), you can reappear at the southern US border sans any sort of documents whatsoever, make up a name, tell them you’re a “migrant”, and viola! a shiny new and unblemished identity.
Maybe it is just the local gov’t incompetence?
The number of unaccounteds is still awfully high for this long after the event, the size of the area and the population involved. You say about 50 are seriously being looked for, but, do we know the status, at least if they are alive or not, of the other 338 “unaccounteds”, or not? If not, why not?
My basis of comparison is an event that was rather close to me, the Mayfield, KY tornado of Dec. 2021. It killed 57 people, so roughly half of the current Maui toll, stayed on the ground just over 165 miles, with a path width of up to 1 mile, and damaged or destroyed over 4000 structures (3778 residences) in and around Mayfield alone — this apparently doesn’t count any of the other towns hit, or structures “out in the counties”, some of which are what I’d guess you’d call “moderately rural areas”. (This was part of an outbreak that killed smaller amounts of people in other “tracks” in KY.) Power outages affected several more thousands of people more: Friends of ours who lived in Mayfield were lucky to have their home not damaged (it was really “close” — classic tornado “houses gone one one side of the street, ok on the other side”.) But they had to evacuate for over a week because: No power, no heat, no water, and they were ill-prepared. I’d guess over 10k people were displaced. Some fairly substantial swaths of cell service went out, too.
Fortunately, there were fewer deaths than Maui, primarily because the warnings were good, and people in this region are generally aware of the risk. Plus, more often than not, if one shelters properly in a house that’s destroyed by a tornado, chances of survival are much better than if you get trapped in a structure that burns down, a car in a fire, etc.
But, still, large numbers of people were displaced by this storm in quite a large area, sometimes widely scattered.
Yet there were never such large numbers of people unaccounted for, and even those numbers dropped rapidly in a few days to almost none. Certainly, after 2-3 days there were few of these “unaccounted for but not really” that you dismiss. What is that gray area, anyway? And why such a big difference? Are the low-funded much-more-ground-to-cover authorities and agencies in Western KY that much more competent than the authorities in Maui? (I could readily believe that, mind you!)

There was a rumor put out there by a video YT Maui local that nearly 200 bodies washed up on the shores of Lanai.
Agree.. doesn’t make any sense.
Democrats.
You saw my news source. Why dont you call them? Id hate to be thr only one gifted with your brillance.
Interestingly, a video that I watched an hour ago on "Where are the Children?", from Eric, now can't be found, at least on my YT feed.
No matter what the authorities may say, their actions do not give me a sense that they are in control of the situation.
Yes, but the place didn’t burn down. Very little left of Lahaina and it is scorched earth and on an island not attached to the mainland USA with no quick support for power and other utilities.
A Message to the WORLD about the Missing & Forgotten Children of the Lahaina Maui Fire
I have no knowledge of the situation other than Free Republic and a couple of Hawaiian news outlets.
The whole situation seems strange.
Government agencies are inept and inefficient and too large and too expensive and don't work.
I wonder how many of those people who are missing will end up “voting” in next year’s election.
Can’t get the families to sell? Kill the heirs and wait ‘em out. Problem solved.
