But as the technology proliferates, privacy advocates say regulations have not kept up, opening the door to intrusive surveillance that would be illegal if conducted by a human police officer.
A, that's irrelevant. Doesn't matter if it's electronic or human spying.
B, even if electronic is ok'd by the courts, a human still has to look at the generated imagery to determine what it is, so now we're back to what's "illegal for a human cop to do".
