NAGOYA, Japan -- Toyota Motor seeks to shatter its production record this year, aiming to manufacture 10.2 million vehicles globally, the Nikkei has learned, and cross the eight-figure milestone for the first time.
The carmaker has set a target to produce about 3.4 million Toyota and Lexus brand vehicles in Japan and roughly 6.8 million units overseas, for increases of 30% and nearly 10%, respectively, from last year.
Toyota believes it needs to domestically produce at least 3 million automobiles to maintain jobs in Japan as well as to preserve the country's unique monozukuri craftsmanship. This would be the first time in four years the car company reached that threshold.
During the first seven months of the year, Toyota raised the production volume 12% from a year earlier to 5.7 million units. The company plans to accelerate the pace by manufacturing an average of 900,000 vehicles a month between August and December
Toyota told major suppliers of the target in notices sent through Tuesday. In January, Toyota issued an output baseline target between 9.5 million to 10.6 million vehicles. The most recent notice to suppliers set a specific production target.
If realized, this would be the first time that vehicles produced under the Toyota and Lexus brands topped 10 million units in a calendar year. The current record of 9.05 million units was set in 2019.
When including numbers from Toyota group companies Daihatsu Motor and Hino Motors, the combined output first topped 10 million in 2013.

The only people I know who *don’t* put 200K+ trouble free miles on their Toyotas either sell them before that or beat the crap out of them.
If American car companies want to compete, they need “200,000 miles only oil, gas and tires’ warranty.

That was true, but this year they are replacing almost all their V6's with Turdo 4's. Not good. They replaced their V8 Tundra's with Twin Turdo v6's and gas mileage didn't improve one bit.
My son’s 2016 Ford Escape with the 1.6 Ecoboost engine has 230,000 miles on it. He is terrible about maintenance, too, but he’s finally learned to pay attention to that.
Unfortunately, there’s either a blown head gasket or a small crack in the cylinder liner at the top of #3 cylinder letting cooling into the combustion chamber. He is due for his first California smog test and the burning coolant may cause it to fail. We are going to try a Head Gasket Sealant to get it through the smog test.
I think Toyota or Honda will be his next car.
I’ve been driving Toyotas for 25 years. Put 250K on my Camry, 175K on my RAV when I traded it in and still got $8K for it, on year 7 with my Tacoma, just bought another RAV4. I routinely get 10+ years out of them and except for oil, tires and brakes, they are almost maintenance free.

My son has about 206000 on his 06 RAV4. Still going strong. He also just bought a RAV Prime, an amazing hybrid. My Tacoma is just a baby with 24000 but I bet it has at least 1000 pounding in the woods. Toyotas are the best Cars and trucks on the road. Had Fords and Chevys for years , I’ll never go back. Figure I’m 55 and only put about 6k a year on my Taco, this could be my last truck!

The 2012 Double cab long bed is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I did not change the front brakes until 92K miles.
Tires, oil, wiper blades, headlights and gasoline are the only expenses.
What I need is a nice summer car to compliment it. Something fun to drive. I was thinking a Mercedes SL500/550 or a BMW hard top convertible. I had a Lexus SC400 for a year. Kinda wish I never sold it. Suggestions appreciated.
Over 300k on my old Supra and the engine still purred like the day I bought it..
I admit to being nervous about the CVT in my 2021 Corolla. But the only option on any of the cars that are both inexpensive and historically reliable. My 1998 Honda CRV got 297K and before that my 1985 Mitsubishi Mirage got 312K.
I am looking at the Miata hard top and it is stunning. Why the HT has a much nicer body I do not know. I used to have friends with British MGs and they were a blast to rid in- 70mph felt like 120. When they ran. I really have no need or ability to drive very fast, the best roads are tight twists and turns out on hwy 1 and to the east.
A friend has the CROWN hybrid. Nice.

I just bought a 2018 Sequoia with the 5.7 liter. 50K miles.
Plan to keep it for 20 years. Didn’t want the 6 cylinder for a beast that heavy.

And yet when I went to the local dealer just recently to enquire about a new RAV4, they cited some delivery that was soooo long, it made me wonder how anyone could possible live with it.
The meaning of inexpensive has been turned on it’s head. You have to buy a real question mark car to get a good price.
All the traditionally good new offerings are loaded up with crazy options now nearly doubling the prices and the traditionally good cars are only found with very high mileage.
Don’t forget that $900 Nitrogen tire fillup.
Yours will last longer and sound better to boot.
I had an ‘04 Sequoia for about 10 years. Good solid vehicle.
Traded it in on a 2010 Ford Expedition. Got 325K miles out of it. Ford quit putting the 5.4 engine in that truck in 2016, so it was on to Toyota again.
I had a 2007 5.4 F150. It missed on on cylinder for 10 minutes or so until it warmed up. The 5.4 was a bad engine.
I hear of people bolting a plate into their Variable Valve Timing making it fixed and solving their variable timing problems.
Well, I got my 2021 Toyota Corolla for about $23K. I did spend $3K to have a decent stereo put in, since I get stuck in bad commute traffic pretty often. Not too bad a price for what has (so far, knock on plastic) been a low-drama car.
Cheap, reliable, that’s all I need. I have a truck for the musical gear and a Sportster for adrenaline.
