Civilisation or barbarism: that is the choice facing all great powers now

The world is heading for the mother of all showdowns between the forces of freedom and autocratic might. Hard as it is to digest, the looming confrontation will make the Cold War look like a warm-up act. This time what is at stake is not simply whether capitalism or socialism is a superior model for civilisation-building.

Rather the question is whether humanity can ascend to the next phase of civilisation at all. Instead it may be doomed to languish in a new dark age of militarism and technological stagnation. The outcome hinges on a stupendous yet pragmatic question: will the great powers opt for greater freedom or greater autocracy to protect and enhance their great power status at this perilous juncture?

There is another astonishing twist: what we face is not a momentous clash of civilizations, as prophesied by Samuel P Huntington, but a story of epic internal struggles. Huntington argued that ambivalent “swing civilisations” like Japan and India would be decisive in the war of individualism vs collectivism.

It turns out that every civilisation is a swing civilisation; every great power will have to make a choice between liberty and authoritarianism, between tapping human genius or AI brute force as a primary resource. That includes the West.

For thousands of years, “civilization” was based on the family. Parents instilled a culture in their children.

Now, whether Japan and China or Western countries, the educated trend setters do not want children.

But they have NOT replaced the role of the family in this new culture. It is a fatal flaw that must be filled... either with family...or with a substitute as strong as family.
