Former President Trump is opposing an effort to move the trial for his election interference case in Georgia up to October, asking to sever his case from that of a co-defendant who asked for a speedy trial.
The notice from Trump came after co-defendant Kenneth Chesebro filed a motion for a speedy trial and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) suggested an Oct. 23 trial date for all 19 defendants in the case.
“President Trump also alerts the Court that he will be filing a timely motion to sever his case from that of co-defendant Chesebro, who has filed a demand for speedy trial, or any other co-defendant who files such a demand,” Trump’s attorney Steven Sadow wrote in response to Willis’s motion.
The swift action shows the potential for infighting among the suite of defendants.
In pursuing a speedy trial, Chesebro, a lawyer and key coordinator of an alleged plan to use fake electors to overturn the election results, would slate the trial to begin within the next two court terms, or within about four months.
It was a move almost certain to be opposed by Trump, who has a history of seeking delays in matters before courts.
The October date is four months earlier than the one Willis initially suggested for the trial over whether Trump and others participated in a criminal conspiracy to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results — a timeline legal experts previously told The Hill was ambitious at best.
If Willis’s proposal is accepted by a judge, Trump’s Georgia trial would become the first of his four criminal cases to be heard by a jury.

That’s not really a good time for a fake trial with football season and all
Or -- as some astute Freepers suggested yesterday -- the legal counsel for these 19 co-defendants are pursuing a deliberate strategy to overwhelm this hapless mutant prosecutor with conflicting motions and demands that will make it damn near impossible for her to prosecute the case in her lifetime.
“Infighting”?
What a bunch of complete nonsense.
Kenneth Chesebro is who I was waiting for as the Dark Horse to push the trial date up sooner.
Didn’t know which of these guys indicted were going to push for it but, Kenneth Chesebro came right out.
An asinine opinion of epic proportion.
Chesebro requested a trial no later than Nov. 3. Chesebro also was a dem up until 2016. I smell a rat.

Delay will rule the day in the Fulton County farce.
If they don’t delay, these trials have the potential at being bigger than OJ, with a ton of scrutiny.
IMO the people engaged in this corrupt lawfare stupidity have really “stepped in it.”
There isn’t any precedent in our history for this ridiculous behavior.
Why do you think he did it?
He needs to talk to his buddy Cheesebro who requested this. Fani wants all 19 tried together to get this over with. This is good for trump as it doesn’t interfere with voting. Great news for all!
It’s possible they have this all under control but I’m old enough to remember all the kraken lawsuits which Trump’s legal team at the time did not have under control. His lawyers have been uneven - at times terrific and at times not so.
Yeah, this is a matter of utmost urgency, seeing as it took almost three years to bring these charges against a "criminal enterprise." And seeking a continuance is hardly anything unusual in the legal world.
Trump just fired his attorney for the GA case and hired a new guy. I wonder what that means.
In the Mar a Lago case, Trump is coordinating all or most of the defenses. In the georgia case he clearly is NOT doing that - which is why you have had sniping from some co-defendants (Jenna Ellis) at Trump for being cheap. It would be hard to imagine why Ellis would coordinate with Trump on strategy and tactics on something as detailed as trial scheduling at this point.
doesn’t the anti-trump judge have some input in determining if the court date speedy trials/slow trial requests are denied or approved?
The judge can do anything here.
Why would Trump want it later? Why run into pure primary+ season and make it a general election issue? The sooner the better, I would think.
Not that different from Trump, then.
What stupidity? The guilty verdicts and punishments have already been written up.
