Roughly 130 million people in 22 states are under various heat warnings, watches and advisories as a dangerous heat dome settles over a huge section of the county.
The searing August heat wave is forecast to continue through at least the end of this week.
The National Weather Service says a potent upper-level ridge is anchored over the Mid-Mississippi Valley, trapping the hot air.
It is bringing oppressive heat from the central U.S. to the Gulf Coast. High temperatures throughout these areas are forecast to reach into the upper 90s and low 100s through Thursday.

It’s been near or over 100 degrees almost every day since late June here in Texas. I think the highest was 109.
Summers are hot? Day-um!
There are SEVERAL THINGS LURKING that are much more pressing than HEAT!
Announcement from super greenies: We need to order the shut down of all air conditioners in all business and homes as they are just making it hotter outside by cooling the inside of the businesses and homes. We MUST do this to stand in solidarity with the homeless who don’t have any air conditioning on the sidewalks where they sit and/or lay. (please note this is sarcasm)
Have you lived there all your life?
How does this summer stack up to summers there over the years?
that’s the rumor lol
It's a very good description of the physical phenomenon in 3D.
A heat dome is caused when atmosphere traps hot ocean air, as if bounded by a lid or cap. Heat domes happen when strong high pressure atmospheric conditions remain stationary for an unusual amount of time, preventing convection and precipitation and keeping hot air "trapped" within a region. This can be caused by multiple factors, including sea surface temperature anomalies and the influence of a La Niña.[1][2]
The excessive scoffing and cynicism around here on any scientific topic is just as deranged as the other side.
No, I got here from the east coast in 2017. This is the hottest summer since I’ve been here I’m pretty sure.
DC is set to have a much cooler than the average 89° August.
Don’t forget Boiling!
2017!
You’re one of them fresh immigrants!
Ask around.. Bet you’ll be told it’s been hotter.
And that’d be true.
Yes. It’s really hot outside.
I have pictures of my mom and her sisters laying out in the yard under a tree because the summer that year was abnormally hot and the houses had no AC back then.
It isn’t any hotter now than it was back then.

The National Weather Service waited until the middle of August to announce that it’ll be hot? Should’ve been all cemented in by, oh, May. Kinda sounds like dereliction of global warming duties.
