Ironically, Yevgeny Prigozhin dismissed this justification for russia's invasion, that Kyiv was planning an attack on Donbas and Crimea. Prigozhin called it a lie.

Very “rational” paranoia. Especially since Donbas is part of Ukraine, as is Crimea, which is the homeland of Tartars, not Russians or Ukrainians. The mayor in exile of Mariupol is Boychenko, a Ukrainian, as is evident from his surname. He was elected with 69% of the vote in 2019.
Nazis don’t vote for Russian-speaking Jewish Presidents, especially not comedians who have toured Russia extensively, prior to the 2019 election which brought him into office, and there is no ethnic difference between a Russian-speaking and a Ukrainian-speaking Ukrainian living in Donbas. There were two militias in Donbas, one the DPR, which is funded by Moscow and made up of Russians, and one the Azov Battalion, which was overrun and taken out of last year. Neither of them are Nazis, per se. Both of them are bad news.
NATO missiles can reach Moscow, if that’s really what NATO wanted, from Turkey, Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, not to mention Finland, which is applying for membership BECAUSE of Putin’s invasion.
Nobody is interested in firing missiles at Moscow, except in the fevered propaganda that Putin’s state-owned media keeps pushing, and which you are waving pompoms for. NATO is about keeping Russia from invading and occupying parts of Europe, which it already did once and is trying to do again.

There was never any freaking chance B4 Pooty’s invasion of Ukraine getting into NATO, much less long range missiles in Ukraine. Too many NATO members were staunchly opposed, and could cite NATO’s own rules to boot.
Pooty had MUCH more to fear from Trump’s effort to get other NATO members to spend their 2% of GDP on defense, which made only slight progress.
Even then, Prigozhin did not attack Putin directly, he said Putin had been lied to. We think of Russia as being a rigid, top down dictatorship, but, the leadership are almost all a bunch of gangsters who kill each other, Pooty being top gangster. I think there’s a good chance an insulted or threatened general ordered the hit. Then can claim it was a mistake, the work of subversives or more traitors, infiltrators (would be rather embarrassing), etc. I also think there’s a high likelihood we’ll never know the truth.
That said, how far into Russia can our AWACS see a S-300 launch?
