Council meeting in affluent San Francisco neighborhood descends into chaos as residents protest turning hotel into homes for 100 homeless people

A local council meeting in an affluent San Francisco neighborhood descended into chaos when hundreds of 'rowdy' residents began booing plans to place homeless people in a nearby hotel.

Crowds of angry Millbrae residents packed out their local community hall on Friday to protest 'Project Homekey' proposals to house 100 rough sleepers at the La Quinta hotel on El Camino Real, close to the city center.

So many people turned up that hundreds had to stand outside the 300-man capacity hall to hear proposals outlined by San Mateo County Executive Mike Callagy.

But Callagy's speech was quickly 'drowned out' by boos from the audience, according to Jordan Grimes, the leader of a grassroots campaign group for affordable housing who was present at the meeting.

Videos show the crowd loudly remonstrating in scenes akin to a sports stadium crowd. Some residents yelled their opposition, while others waved signs, flung their arms in the air and made thumbs-down gestures toward the speakers.

'The crowd is rowdy and angry, booing the County Exec until he's drowned out completely. Multiple times,' Grimes live-tweeted from the overflow area outside the hall.

He said the situation escalated when county staff hosted a Q&A session - which was quickly overrun by 'people having their own conversations' and 'yelling'.

Brandishing home-made signs reading 'Don't Bully Millbrae', 'Protect Us' and 'Safety for Millbrae', the neighbors aired their concerns about public safety and the proximity of the hotel to several schools.

Like many cities in San Mateo County, Millbrae has a high median household income of $141,399 - while also being home to a hefty rough sleeping population.

Millbrae resident Patricia Lam came early to secure a seat - equipped with a large sign reading 'keep our children and seniors safe'.

Yes, I have relatives in San Mateo. They’re raving lunatic liberals.

There’s something about the California sun that seems to bake people’s brains.

Not a chance. Because every liberal always believes that the next time it will be different. “Sure these Democrats let us down. But we will continue to vote D. Because the next time it will be different.”

And in a way, they’re right. Because the next time it will be different.
It will be worse, much worse.

“Sounds familiar.”

Not a chance. Because every conservative always believes that the next time it will be different. “Sure these Republicans let us down. But we will continue to vote R. Because the next time it will be different.”

And in a way, they’re right. Because the next time it will be different.
It will be worse, much worse.

FWIW, I am investigating various non-pharma means of addressing this issue. I can tell you (as if you need to hear) that it seriously impacts your sleep, which in turn seriously impacts your mood and energy the next day. I’ll tell you there are days where I just sleep all day and don’t have the energy to lick a frickin’ envelope; I went to see my doc for chronic fatigue and his approach so far has been to conduct a sleep study, which I appreciate.

Yes, getting old sucks bigly.

I remember Army tents and sleeping bags a few years back. Sometimes followed by green eggs, sausage and coffee from a large pot. Something like that maybe?

Ha! You make a very good point, especially it comes to the GOPe.

Those people fool us as much as the radical Democrats fool their constituents.

GOPe: “Vote for us, and we’ll balance the budget. And we’ll stop illegal immigration. And we’ll end all those silly foreign adventures. Trust us!”

So we trust them, and it’s just more of the same.

BART goes straight into SFO, and continues south to Milbrae. Milbrae is the last BART station southbound. Its also a big Caltrain station, a good place to switch from BART to Caltrain.

I am glad to see that citizens got off their butts and showed up to object to this crap. Just because San Francisco is stupid, Miilbrae doesn’t have to be similarly stupid.

‘Project Homekey plans plans to house 100 rough sleepers...’- rough sleepers? They won’t house you if you sleep well?
