Hawaii Governor Issues Update on Maui Fires: ‘This Process Is Agonizing’

Hawaii’s governor on Friday released an update on the wildfires that have ravaged the island of Maui, noting that the process of searching for survivors after the disaster has been “agonizing” for families and the state.

“Lahaina will rise again,” governor Josh Green said in a statement on the crisis. “It will be a symbol of our resilience, our values, and our sacred bonds of Ohana. When it is rebuilt, it will be a living memorial to the loved ones we have lost.”

The death toll in the catastrophe that has wiped out large parts of the town of Lahaina reached 114 as of Friday, Maui County officials said. The fires haven’t been spreading for several days, the Maui Fire Department reported.

I just found this:

Map, satellite images show where Hawaii fires burned throughout Lahaina, Maui

Maui County reported the following on the initial brush fire:

Posted on: August 8, 2023 Lahaina fire declared 100% contained; water conservation urged due to power outages Lahaina Fire Update No. 2 at 9:55 a.m.: Maui Fire Department declared the Lahaina brush fire 100% contained shortly before 9 a.m. today. However, power outages are impacting the ability to pump water, and the public is asked to conserve water in West Maui. Fueled by strong wind from Hurricane Dora that is passing well south of Hawai’i, a brush fire of about three acres was reported at 6:37 a.m. today in the area of Lahainaluna Road. Evacuations were ordered at 6:40 a.m. in the area surrounding Lahaina Intermediate School. There were two people at the Lahaina Civic Center evacuation shelter as of 8:50 a.m. Lahainaluna Road remains closed between Kelawea and Kuialua streets while Hawaiian Electric responds to a downed power line in the area. The American Red Cross opened Lahaina Civic Center as an evacuation center due to the fire and area power outages tied to high winds. The shelter will remain open until further notice, but the facility has no power. Pet owners utilizing the shelter will need to have pets properly restrained. Winds in the area remain a concern. A high-wind warning issued by the National Weather Service for portions of Maui County remains in effect through 6 a.m. Wednesday. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
This image from the linked article purports to show the post-wind-driven-wildfire's damage to Lahaina:

The irony is that this image also shows a structure fire at the location of a building cited in Google maps as being the old Kahola Brewery...a building whose roof is adorned nearly 75% with solar panels. Just look at that thick, black smoke.

Worse, this article cites the cause of the Kohola Brewery fire as being from the original fire which was reported to have begun near a school (reported as an 'early fire' which hadn't yet registered on satellite images as of 6:40am and hours prior to storm winds).

Hessemer [JD Hessemer, a Maui resident and co-owner of Kohola Brewery in Lahaina] said he had driven to work Tuesday morning and encountered escalating winds and fallen powerlines that forced him to take an alternate route from his usual path. Once he got to the brewery, he and his employees decided that remaining on-site for the day would be unsafe due to a widespread power outage and extensive damage to powerlines. He said that one of his colleagues stayed behind to complete a task but eventually also evacuated before the fire reached the brewery and destroyed it.
Why is the brewery burning a full 24 hours after it was reported to be on fire and the only structure burning in the wake of Lahaina's destruction?

I think it's clear that we still don't know all of the facts.

“”Lahaina will rise again,’ governor Josh Green”

No, it won’t. Some town might be where Lahaina was, but it won’t be the same. I can’t even imagine. We were thinking about visiting again, but won’t go back now.

The mom and pops will be gone, replaced by corporate franchises, just another tourist trap that looks just like the rest of them.

Not as agonizing as the child and families burning to death in a huddled mass.

Why? Because Leftism is a religion. Death, destruction and chaos is their "God's will". That's why.

You'll never persuade them that their theology (I use "theology" in the most literal sense) is wrong. It's either the fault of Republicans, or Climate Change, or Trump, or, in the event that any of those can't be made to fit their template (that's rare - they have amazing skills at contorting their delusions to fit their religion, but it does happen) - it's their "God's will".

i am concerned that the authorities will declare the area to be an environmental disaster zone, and then raze the area before people can document their losses for insurance purposes. then they would build a small memorial and a large casino hotel where there were previously homes. the plastic tarp fences that are going up now are reminiscent of construction zone fences that iirc are put up to keep new construction dust from speading by wind. if it is for new construction, then what new construction? if it is not for new construction, then what is it for? the news from lahaina seems as if it is that there is no news. no plans (until it is too late?) no body counts. no one allowed in, even to photograph and/or report. something underhanded seems to be going on. it seems ominous.

That's my nightmare; that rescuers will find a place victims huddled together thinking it was safe from the fire, but eventually, was not.

A lot of the ‘locals’ are under the influence of one Union or another. Their family members follow them in their votes, The votes go heavily towards anyone with a D . Even if their votes go against any fellow Hawaii ( Duke Aiona) Union sheep, they bleat in unison. Plus, the Unions and the Dems hand out lots of yummy free food, during campaign seasons. Vote buying, Hawaii-style. Add to this, the most poorly organized and ineffective State Republican Party (HRP) in the entire country. It’s a walk in the park for the Dems.
