Hawaiian Electric was aware of infrastructure issues that could contribute to a wildfire threat but focused on shifting the company toward renewable energy rather than fixing problems, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
The utility company concluded in 2019 that it needed to invest more in preventing its power lines from emitting sparks, among other issues. Consulting California's efforts to reduce wildfires, the company drafted a plan to install more insulated conductors, fire-retardant poles and more aggressive monitoring technology.
The company barely pursued those goals over the next two years, however, investing less than $250,000 on wildfire projects, according to the Journal. It did not request state permission to raise rates to pay for wildfire prevention until 2022.

So climate change did cause this............
Let's see, a salty ocean nearby and non-insulated conductors is trouble-a-brewin'.
Back in the old days in Florida you could hear the salt causing arcs and sizzling.
. My college buddy and I camped under high tension lines in northern Quebec once. You could hear the snapping and sizzling all night.
So in ironic way, climate change IS responsible. Any murder charges yet?
So climate change caused the power lines to blown down and burn up the island. That will be the narrative, instead of saying the power lines were not strong or stable enough to withstand high winds.

Won’t fetch water because there’s a hole in the bucket,
And can’t plug up the hole with cane because the axe is dull
And can’t sharpen the axe because there’s no water for the wet stone
And can’t fetch water because there’s a hole in the bucket.
Transfer those lyrical excuses to the delay in insulating the conductors, and you have a disquieting picture of incompetence and fecklessness.
Interesting about the year, 2019...
In Oct, 2019 I was on a cruise around Hawaii and about Oct 3, we came into Maui where I took a shore excursion to Lahaina...
We started with the Valley of the Kings which was very pretty and got back onto the bus at 11am where we waited for a couple of minutes for the driver to get off the phone...
He told us that the day before there had been grass fires near Lahaina and they were put out but now they had started up again and there was so much smoke the only road into Lahaina was going to be closed...
We didnt end up going and the roads were clogged with other vehicles, and it was slow going as we left that area to return to the ship....
Rats at play following the agenda
The climate change ideology kills. Even in paradise.
I’m skeptic of the arcing power lines narrative. Way too often when climate change starts multiple fires simultaneously it’s arson.
Interesting it left shrubs and trees 15ft from houses burned flat …strange the alarms didn’t go off…strange the new police chief is the incident commander from the Las Vegas shooting…weird eyewitnesses say police blocked the automobiles from exiting the area during the fire…children sent home alone from school…boats burned 1/4 mile from shore… assfault , basically evaporates at 400° Aluminum car rims melt at 1200°…why is the tar not melted ? Why didn’t miss Oprah gates and Bezos properties?
Strange
Almost no on the scene news reporting when have you ever seen a disaster like that those vultures are usually in there as soon as the wind stops
Sure Looks like some rich people didn’t like their neighbors .
And the next article on FR will have whining about their power bill…
we missed maui but loved our adventurehttps://www.cruiselawnews.com/2011/11/articles/rescue/celebrity-century-cruise-ship-rescues-injured-sailor-in-pacific/
Bankruptcy on the horizon?
Climate nuts can kill.
It is a matter of priorities. The electrical infrastructure might be a bit decrepit, and wildfires might start due to sparks from the electrical grid, but by switching to clean sources of energy this problem is obviated. Sparks from the electrical grid will not ignite fires if the original energy source is green. The sparks fall and simply die away without igniting the brush underneath.
