Flights serving the eastern Sicilian city of Catania were halted on Monday after an eruption from nearby Mount Etna, local authorities said, bringing fresh travel woe to the crisis-plagued Italian airport.

The 3,330 metre (10,925 ft) high volcano burst into action overnight, firing lava and ash high over the Mediterranean island. The lava flow subsided before dawn, but ash was still coming from one of the craters.

Flights to and from Catania, a popular tourist destination, would be suspended until 8:00 p.m. (1800 GMT), the airport said on Twitter.

Catania Mayor Enrico Trantino banned the use of motorcycles and bicycles in the city for the next 48 hours, because many streets were covered in ash, and ordered cars to drive no faster than 30 kph (19 mph) due to the skiddy conditions.

And each one spews more stuff into the atmosphere - but we’ll blame it on me and my SUV.

It’s always telling. I was there from 2005-2011 and it was always going off. We had the Ashe on the ground every other year or so.

Yep, although when I was there (at NAS Sigonella) it seemed that Aetna was always aglow, but we only had indications of light ash fall. Had to wash down the airplanes a couple times a week....

But rest assured that their and the sun’s effect on climate is minimal compared to human-generated carbon dioxide...

I suppose that tossing Greta in hasn’t been considered?

Edgar Cayce predicted that when My Etna and Mt Pelee in Martinique erupt together there will be 90 days till massive earth changes, floods, west coast goes under the sea.

Stay tuned...

I almost hope for a few major volcanic eruptions to cause global cooling.

How the solar cycle (and the solar magnetic field affecting how many cosmic ray particles hit earth) can affect volcanic eruptions.

Good idea - she's most likely the only 20-year old virgin on the planet.

Don't bother going there. There's nothing to rent.

My brother, sister-in-law, and cousins on my dad’s side of the family are going there in the next week or so. They’re planning on doing a tour of the whole island, as well as visiting where our grandparents came from.
Gonna give him a heads-up on this…
