Concerns are growing in Washington, D.C. about some major grocery stores being able to keep their doors open due to shoplifting.
During a news conference Friday, D.C. Councilman Trayon White said he spoke to the regional management of a popular Giant Food store on Alabama Avenue Southeast.
“We had the opportunity to meet with some of the leadership of this Giant,” White said. “Some of the regional leadership at this Giant, what we heard was disheartening. We learned that this Giant has lost over $500,000 in product loss, which is about 20% of the sales. We know it's tough times and we know the price of food has skyrocketed in the last three years. But we cannot afford to hurt ourselves by constantly taking it from the store. It means that everybody is going to be without a place to eat. And enough is enough.”
On Friday, White spoke out about the high rate of shoplifting at the Giant Food grocery store on Alabama Avenue Southeast.
“To date, this Giant has had at least 135 stops from people stealing from the store,” he said. “And they almost double that amount that didn't get stopped.”

Sorry to hear that. It’s safe where I live. I know there is shoplifting on the main drag where to box stores are. It on the police blotter on the township website. It’s usually folks from Harrisburg which is near by. The other major crime is a dui or two per month. Folks still leave their doors unlocked around here.
Mass Shoplifting is generally done by the same 25 people on a contract basis
D.C. Police Union blames the council’s emergency police reforms for making police working in the city “miserable” and its causing staffing shortages and more violence. Pemberton also pointed to the U.S. District Attorney’s Office for releasing two-thirds of its arrests with “no charges.”
“If there is no consequence for engaging in this kind of behavior of armed carjackings, shootings, stabbings, and even rapes, people will continue to commit these crimes,” he said.
Bus loads of visitors from the South will solve the problem.
Because the real, and only, solution involves ships and one way tickets.
It’s sickening to think there are so many people that live so close together in big cities that they are incapable of banding together to do the most basic things, like eliminating drug dealers, prostitutes, cleaning vacant lots, cleaning their own properties, stopping shoplifting and every other minor crime. Why can’t they find a mob of good people to thwart the mobs of bad people?
“Gibbeting repeat thieves outside the store as an example to the others should also be an option.”

I have no objection to that at all.
Taking reparations into their own shopping carts?
(has forbidden personnel from leaving base on foot)
WOW 😳😨
Maybe they meant something more like this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TzmHmadPzo
7News also asked Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano what is he doing to hold shoplifters accountable for stealing merchandise and what is he doing to address this crime trend. More than a month later, Descano still hasn’t answered 7News’ questions.
The communities that depend on these grocery stores need to put pressure on the crooks who are robbing the stores into bankruptcy.
It’s completely unreasonable to expect a store to continue in business while it takes such huge losses in sales because of theft.
Stop the theft in those communities and the stores will stay and/or come back in.
When the very first thing someone screams is racism because of something happening, you know exactly who is doing the crime.
Trump could have 11 or even all 12 D.C. jurors who are also shoplifters.
D.C. home rule should be repealed. Let Congress govern the district as the Constitution says.
......Why can’t they find a mob of good people to thwart the mobs of bad people? (That’s a rhetorical question)
DC mayor Bowser who does not enforce the law is now calling for the national guard to police the city due to the dramatic increase in crime. She still won’t enforce the law if the guard stops them. Besides, enforcing the law for an incompetent racist mayor is not a function of the National Guard.
You know things are getting bad at stores when the only thing not locked up is the suntan lotion.
Pretty much an all dem, all left-side-of-the-bell-curve show.
