The DeSantis campaign, a super PAC linked to him and a nonprofit group supporting him together paid $95,000 in recent months to the Family Leader Foundation, an Iowa-based nonprofit led by evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats,

For that money, DeSantis and supporting groups got three pages of advertisements in a booklet distributed at the July forum attended by 2,000 Christian conservatives, and tickets to the summit, lunch and an after-dinner event.

Vander Plaats and his group are leaders in the state’s Christian conservative movement, which has enormous political influence in Iowa.

“Vander Plaats clearly understands his political power, his kingmaker status in Iowa, and how thirsty candidates are for his endorsement,” said Paul S. Ryan, a lawyer who worked previously at two nonpartisan campaign finance watchdogs,

Bribing people for support often works in politics with relative unknowns, but Trump voters, like myself, already have their minds made up.

This is an attack on Christianity not on Desantis.

Trump did not attend last month’s event in Des Moines. That was Trump’s
loss, Vander Plaats said in a post on the messaging platform X, formerly
known as Twitter. He added that it “becomes more clear...people want to
turn the page.”

"Turning the page" is pretty expensive at ($95,000 / 3) = $31,667.67 a page!

Here’s an interesting sidebar.

Churches, while by default non-profits, are also, as are non-profits, subject to “unrelated business income tax” if the engage in certain activities.

Selling adverting is one of those activities. If the church collected more than $1000 in UBI then the church must prepare and file a form 990-T and pay tax on any net income that might result from the activity.

The 990-T is a public document, and must be provided by the entity to the public.

Maybe because

(Vander Plaats) He has said publicly that he could endorse someone near the end of the year besides Trump, who he has publicly criticized.

and Trump was at TurningPoint Action

And? Isn’t that what campaign funds are for, campaigning? If Trump paid some group or other similarly, would you post that article? Meanwhile, Trump is using his leadership PAC money to pay his legal fees. The problem is that a candidate’s leadership PAC money can only be used for other candidates, not for himself or for his own campaign. Save America wants it’s 60 million back.

If anyone wants to directly help Pres. Trump with his legal fees, Patriot Legal Defense Fund, Inc. ( http://patriotlegaldefensefund.com/ ) is specifically and legally set up for that. Let’s keep him out of FEC trouble if we can. Of course, vet the organization to make sure it’s a good one.

Looking into this, the organization is not a “church” but a plain vanilla non- profit. On their 2022 990 they indicated they did file a 990-T.

Always has been. Trump supporters know he embraces homosexuality l, which by its nature requires child rape to perpetuate its existence.

That story keeps being posted and mis-represented here

Save America largely raised money from small donors before Trump entered the 2024 presidential race and the group is formally separate from his election campaign.
But it has been a principal funder of a super PAC known as MAGA Inc, which has spent heavily on ads supporting Trump. Save America transferred some $60 million to the group in 2022, but on Monday it reported to election regulators that it got refunds of more than $12 million from MAGA Inc.

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-fundraising-group-reports-more-than-21-million-legal-expenses-2023-08-01/

Save America gave the money to a pac that spent it on advertisement.

And the Patriot Legal Defense Fund for Donald Trump doesn't appear to be set up yet, as it has been redirecting to the DonaldJTrump.com contribute page.

This guy is a liberal that goes to church (i.e. a pro-life liberal).

In 2018, he published an opinion piece in The New York Times titled “Cruelty at the Border Is Not Justice” in which he characterized the Trump administration family separation policy as “unconscionable” and “inexcusable.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Vander_Plaats

He is a retired highschool principle who ran for governor multiple times and lost.

I’ve never voted for him in a primary election.

Turning the page won't help in the slightest. Trump is going to be the nominee, his supporters are too firm in their resolve (I think for goood reasons).

I like RDS as a governor, but buying an influential Christian to help boost his chances with evangelicals in Iowa is a bad look for him as well as the church guy.
