a friend (who just recently passed) had lived in China and knew the culture and politics well and we talked frequently about how Trump was boxing Xi in, to the point where a coup or removal by the miltary leadership was looking probable as Trump applied more and more pressure. If there’s any truth to that theory, what Johnson says makes perfect sense. Anyone who doesn’t thing Xi would inflict that kind of damage on his own people for what he thought to be a greater goal is naive.
