Niger is slipping away from the West
Washington Post ^ | August 9, 2023 | Ishaan Tharoor

For now, the junta in Niger seems to be winning its standoff with its West African neighbors and the West. A Sunday deadline put forward by regional bloc ECOWAS for the generals to step aside and restore democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum to power elapsed, with little sign of countries like Nigeria or Senegal readying a military intervention. Instead, in a dramatic show of defiance, the coup leaders staged a massive rally at a stadium in the capital Niamey, where a top general warned against anyone threatening “Niger’s forward march,” while hundreds in the stands waved Nigerien and even some Russian flags and chanted anti-France slogans. The biggest airbase the US has ever built in dollars is just being completed there. We have a giant drone base there. France has lots of assets there.

Now the new Junta is bringing in the Russian Wagner group.

Another historic Biden Administration failure.

This base which includes all of our latest Drone assets in the African continent will likely be lost to US enemies -- Thanks Joe

The media is not concentrating on this massive failure -- because, Orange Man Bad...

To show how bad this is in relations the new junta says according to Twitter": "The revolutionary government of Niger has responded to the suspension of US aid by telling the US: “We don’t want your money, use it to fund a weight loss program for Victoria Nuland.”

Countries around the world — many of which Americans couldn’t find on a map — are fleeing the West, the U.S. in particular. We’re viewed as bullies by much of the world.

Ouch. When does Nuland order the air strikes to be launched?
Lindsey will be all for it if his donors are taking a bath.

Seriously though--the conduct we have seen from the Afghanistan withdrawal to the Ukraine fiasco, and the financial bullying is driving an alignment of many nations against the US.

I have to start wondering if this is intentional via a 5th column working inside the US.

Must have been built by Biden Construction Inc.

If they think we’re “bullies” they are going to love being under the Russo-Chinese umbrella, LOL.

Again, to take note of the messaging involved....

WaPo says as their title, "Niger is slipping away from the West."

Niger is in Africa, not usually claimed to be a part of the West. After the various anti-colonial wars against some European colonialists, and with the US never having been a colonialist in Africa, the notions are wrapped together. "The West."

And of "the West," one country is identified as "slipping away."

Odd given the number of nations in the continent of Africa which do not consider themselves property of "the West."

Messaging. Nudging. Preparing for a likely military action against a nation that is "slipping away," because "sliiping away" is not to be allowed. If you are a master or owner or ruler.

Another Biden failure? Nuland was not well received, which must have been a surprise to Obama's girl and Blinken's number two.

Whatever comes, the "West" is souring its reputation big time. It's almost as if we really don't need enemies, when the psychopaths in the White Powder House are enemy enough.

They look at what Obama/Hillary did to Libya and other recent messes as examples of the west ruining and destroying what little they have built. The French are the bigger villains to Niger I believe but our assets we gave millions to the corrupt government to utilize are going down the drain. A lot of this was done on Trump’s watch as well but it is being lost now.

FWIW here’s another take on it. (It involves the BRICS and pipelines.)

I wonder who will get that nice new Air force base. China? Russia? Iran? Niger?
Naa scratch Niger, their Air Force is still awaiting that first shipment of Curtis JN-4s. Delivery was held up by coup.

Savage and funny. The Nigerian junta must have an American on their payroll. How surprising that foreigners don't like fat, nasty Karen's.

Several African kleptocracies have already experienced the Chinese way of conducting business. The Chinese pony up a huge wad of cash — technically a loan — with valuable infrastructure or resources as collateral. When the hapless Africans are unable to repay the loan, the Chinese take possession of the port or railroad or mine.

We gave the Taliban a giant American airbase in Afghanistan, why wouldn’t we give Niger a similar asset, especially when we are in the process of getting kicked out of the country

/sarcasm

No way, did they really say that?

That would be the second airbase built with American tax dollars given up. The first was Baghram.
