Ukrainian Refugees Fill Positions In North Dakota Oil Industry

Ukrainian refugees are filling open job positions in the shale patch of North Dakota, thanks to a humanitarian program, the AP reports, noting 16 Ukrainians have already started work in the shale patch and another 12 are due to arrive later this month.

There are some 2,500 job vacancies in the Bakken shale play in North Dakota, which currently produces some 1.1 million barrels of oil daily.

The output in the play peaked in 2019 at 1.5 million barrels daily and has been in decline since then.

As of June, there were 38 drilling rigs in the Bakken but North Dakota’s mineral resources director Lynn Helms said at the time that these should bounce back to the mid-40s when the first batch of Ukrainian workers under the humanitarian program arrived.

“If this workforce program works as well as we hope, we’re going to see that rig count bounce back, and that adds a lot of dollars to North Dakota’s economy,” Helms said in June, as quoted by the Bismarck Tribune.

The program, dubbed Bakken Global Recruitment of Oilfield Workers, or GROW, was launched earlier this year with the aim of filling job vacancies in the Bakken through immigration with the initial focus on Ukrainians.

The Bakken shale play is still one of the biggest producing oil regions in the U.S. shale patch. The biggest player there is Harold Hamm’s Continental Resources, the company that revealed the true potential of the place back in the early 2000s.

Since then, however, natural depletion has reduced the output of crude oil while increasing the production of natural gas, Bloomberg reported earlier this year.

The government decided it was better for the Mob to run the Unions, than the Communists.

Seconded.

They are real refugees from a European Christian country. Which still reveres large families.

Piss off the Replacers today, bring in 5 million Ukrainians and their families. The plains of Western Canada are full of their relatives, working farms in Saskatchewan and Manitoba since over 120 years ago. Those are the people opposing TrooDope.

When we get Trump back in and ramp up production even more, Bakken will need every guy they can get.

The end results are the same. The sheep are controlled and the Government controls the controllers. Everybody is happy. The sheep believe that they are still free. They believe that the 2024 election will be honest.

You mean there’s still a North Dakota oil industry? I thought Biden and DC had finished that off.

I live in Minot ND, right in the eastern edge of the Bakken.

Those jobs are long hours, long weeks, often away from family. Physically demanding, risk of exposure to toxic gasses, let alone simply risk of injury. -30 winter work outdoors, 90-95 summer work under the sun. You stick with it you can make very good money. But even the money doesn’t stop the high turnover, because it’s a young mans game. The oil companies will hire anyone with a clean driving record, pass a physical and a drug screen. Plus they’ll give you a signing bonus. They still can’t get enough men and women to fill the crews. (The women typically and downloading well extraction data, doing safety inspections, and the light-medium physical tasks.)

True. But they are vacancies which means not enough Americans want the job. If every position was filled, they would be looking elsewhere.

Good. Ukrainians have traditionally been hard workers, law abiding and assimilate into the larger culture...........

The Ukrainians who came here in the late 19th and early 20th century are hard workers but a cliquish lot.

Also I would imagine a lot of Ukrainians have experience in the oil industry.

Again, pay American wages and Americans will do the jobs. If any openings, then the issue is wages are too low, company not making effort to recruit and hire Americans. You get what you pay for and want. I’ve hired over 500 people in last couple of years and know this point explicitly.

Probably many openings are unfilled because ND only recently began drilling and pumping again. I think I saw the figure that the oil companies needed oil prices at $70 or $80 a barrel before they would start up again. So I suspect they are in what I would call the demothballing phase. Lots of openings, but the old crews had long since moved on to blacker pastures.

I spent 4 years in the central middle west, and told my husband I would NEVER move back there. It would destroy our marriage. Ukranians are accustomed to the bitterly cold and roasting hot central continental climate which is a lot worse in ND than where I was. My experience included a week of winter from 26 to 20 below, and a week of summer from 105 to 107 degrees, no night below 93.

One thing many Americans do not realize is that Putin invaded Crimea and sent the little green men into eastern Ukraine 2 years (2014) after Ukraine signed oil exploration contracts with several major US oil companies. Gas around Crimea and oil and gas in eastern Ukraine. This caused cancelation of the exploration contracts. Putin did not want Ukraine to “invade” his European oil market. So instead he invaded Ukraine.
That has worked out well for him hasn’t it!

Personal Experience: Mid-Atlantic location. I recently had X-finity WiFi installed in my home. The two technicians who installed both the exterior and interior wiring were Ukrainians. They were tall, fit men around 30 and seemed slightly embarassed when I expressed sympathy for the Ukraine war.
