Hospitals and clinics in five states are facing disruptions due to a cyberattack Thursday that forced some emergency rooms to close.
The attack began at facilities operated by Prospect Medical Holdings. The company’s facilities in California, Texas, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania were affected by the cyberattack.
“Upon learning of this, we took our systems offline to protect them and launched an investigation with the help of third-party cybersecurity specialists,” the company said in a statement Friday.

No, the attack began on their network that connects these facilities.

An AP story says their network is down and that smells like ransomware to me.

As poster "ChicagoConcervative27" stated, most of these attacks originate from Russia and China. The malware in a great many cases is actually developed by government agencies and then sold to favored criminal gangs who remain under government protection as long as they attack acceptable targets.
Other attack sources include India, Pakistan, Iran and Africa (Somalia, Nigeria). Those guys don't write their stuff of course. They buy it from other groups. Perhaps a cut of the loot goes back to somebody in the sponsoring governments. Hacker gangs in 3rd-world countries usually can be identified quickly, but it is very hard to shut them down or extradite people. Sometimes it does happen. I wonder what gets traded to make that happen.
No, we cannot just send covert special forces to hunt down and kill the hackers. We do not have the organizational skills or competence to do that, even if we had political will to do so.
The Russians, on the other hand, take very great offense if hacker gangs hit something of theirs. I am not sure what they do in response, but an ordinary criminal gang does not hit them twice.
Hacker gangs are small groups which are constantly breaking up and re-forming with different members. Sort of like unsuccessful rock music bands.
Russians supposedly have the best, sneakiest malware writers, but the Chinese have some very good ones. And of course, there is our own CIA and NSA, and a collection of other US groups without common names. A convention of all these folks would be a pretty interesting affair.
How about the 2nd option but after a week go with the first.

That is why I was amused at the poster who wanted to take Executive Action against the hackers.
That could be called inciting insurrection.

When my wife was going through chemo I was using Epic’s My Chart to manage the insurance and keep up with the payments.
Our hospital had an obscure link on one of the pages where I could see every item that was scanned into the system. As anyone who has been in a hospital lately will know, they scan everything into the system for controls, inventory, and billing.
I will go back and look at the site and see if I can find it. I will send you a PM if I track it down.

After last year I should be better versed dissecting hospital bills.
I have to admit-the people that scam elderly, vulnerable people out of their money puts me solidly on your side.
I watched a video a while back, showing what appeared to be a standard call center in India somewhere, complete with cubicles, computers, headsets, carpeted floors, the whole nine yards, stuffed with Indians who were hard at work.
They were scamming elderly, vulnerable people in America. They viewed what they were doing as a valid job worthy of being held down and worked at.
The script was disgusting.
One of them was saying something like “My grandmother, who I love so much, sounds very much like you, she is so short on money, and I am helping her, so I want to help you too...” or something like that.
It enraged me. I am fully in support of treating these people the same as hackers.
LOL, that post did make me laugh. I have firsthand knowledge of this issue. Unfortunately, people are flawed and make poor decisions. We try to protect them from theirselves with varying degrees of success.
Pssst...they are lying to you.
And when the software is being upgraded, hijacked, or system is down, work grinds to a halt.
Blame govt regulations for those costs. You are paying for your pill plus three or four others that are required to be available. Oh and all those who have no insurance and MUST be treated anyway
