Ron DeSantis says he has 'sympathy' for some student-loan borrowers — and wants to make it easier for them to get rid of their debt in court (bankruptcy)

Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida doesn't support broad student-loan forgiveness. But he does think bankruptcy should be an option for borrowers who cannot afford to pay off their debt.

"It's wrong to say that a truck driver should have to pay off the debt of somebody who got a degree in gender studies. This is not the taxpayers that should have to do that," he added. "At the same time, I have sympathy for some of these students because I think they were sold a bill of goods. I think these universities knew that they could take all this federal loan money.

DeSantis said that a solution to that problem would be holding colleges financially accountable if students were unable to pay off a "successful" degree. He added that he thought "student loans should be dischargeable in bankruptcy."

I’m not a never Trumper. Go back over my comments and you will see I’m a supporter (and a 2x voter), often.

Why do you (and your group) have to always assume such extremes? Again why does it have to be this battle?

Democrats want to forgive student debt because it is money laundering to leftists.

I have sympathy for a lot of the students too. Not the ones who got their degrees in homosexuality in homo-sapiens studies.

However, many did what they were supposed to do. They got the technical training only to have the jobs shipped out of the country by the free traitors.

I'm not for bailouts, but it would serve us right if we did have to bail them out.

If someone has been responsibly working on paying off their loans, then yes, perhaps some debt forgiveness is in order.

Otherwise, cut out the rest of the stuff, and don’t pay for those who refuse to even try.

They did after all, sign an agreement to pay off the loan. A little personal responsibility from this generation would be nice to see.

The loans are through the government WHICH MEANS the bankruptcy is against the taxpayers DeSantis is a MORON!!!

A mouthful, you just said. Your statement should have killed the thread. DeSantis is flailing about. He won't make it through September.

He added that he thought "student loans should be dischargeable in bankruptcy."

As long as there is some debt left over that is still the responsibility of the borrower, I don't have a problem with that. Virtually every other kind of debt can be discharged in bankruptcy.

no, he is saying:

quote “DeSantis said that a solution to that problem would be holding colleges financially accountable if students were unable to pay off a “successful” degree”

He wants the college that gave these people worthless degrees to pay up as part of the bankruptcy process. And that is actually a good idea.

Ya know, I’m a Trump supporter, but I do realize that he might not be able to make it to the finish line. That leaves DeSantis as one of two next-likely GOP nominees. It’d really be nice if DeSantis stopped trying to be all things to all people. IOW, stop sucking up to the left... and taking their money. They only plan to destroy you if you get the GOP nod.

“Leaving the fed government, i.e. the tax payer, to foot the unpaid debt...”

As opposed to regular bankruptcy where the same people foot the bill? You just wanted to rant on DeSantis.

Another slap in the face to all those who PAID every penny of their education past high school.

A POX on all politicians who think they can insult millions to get votes from other millions.

I paid for EVERY cent of my classes/books/work materials. NEVER even thought of getting a loan.

And there was no meaningful GI Bill when I served post-Vietnam era.

I was a 6 year push button in the late 70's and early 80's. The educational program was called VEAP. Save $1 and the feds contribute $2. I didn't save a dime when I was stationed on shore, but when I was stationed on a ship for several years I dumped everything I earned into the VEAP program and savings. When I left the service and went back to college, I had no debt when I graduated.
