Regional electricity providers tasked with keeping America’s lights on warned Tuesday that the Biden administration must delay the retirement of fossil fuel power plants to give renewables time to catch up — or else risk major energy shortfalls.
They said grid reliability would be jeopardized by quickly transitioning electricity use from coal and natural gas to green alternatives such as wind and solar.
The transmission groups, which collectively deliver power from energy sources to tens of millions of homes in dozens of states, told reporters that extreme heat conditions this summer underscore the need to slow the closures of power plants, particularly those using coal.
“I’m not saying now’s the time to double down [on fossil fuels]; I’m just saying now’s the time to slow down on the removal of [those] assets from our footprint,” said Lanny Nickell, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Southwest Power Pool, a regional transmission organization serving 14 states across the central U.S. from South Dakota to Louisiana.
Two other major regional electricity suppliers, PJM Interconnection and Tri-State Generation and Transmission, offered similar warnings.
“I would stress the need for a balanced portfolio. You do need wind, you do need solar, but you do need something to back it up,” said Tri-State Chief Operating Officer Barry Ingold. “You need something dispatchable. As we’re taking coal plants offline, our challenge is going to be … can you build a gas plant that bridges that gap?”
Tri-State provides electricity to 42 utilities across the rural West that serve 1 million consumers in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico and Wyoming.

Since when does the government have the authority to be able to decide to close down businesses??????
Where in the Constitution is that power granted?
Instead of begging, it needs to be lawsuit time based on the Constitutional powers enumerated to the government.
Good luck with financing these companies if Dems have any say in the matter.
If blackouts occur, I hope people will realize which officials are at fault and proceed to express their extreme displeasure with them.
Some will realize it was a mistake. Some know exactly what they are doing and the death and misery it will cause on Americans and they want it. The former is your average propagandized American, the later are hardcore genocidal maniacs.
The problem with the Soviet designed reactors is that they did not bother with those silly concrete CONTAINMENT DOMES. So, when Chernobyl melted down the radioactive steam was vented into the atmosphere.
My former neighbor helped build the Seabrook Nuclear power plant in NH. The Dome over the reactor is 6’ thick of rebar reinforced concrete. It was designed to survive a direct strike by a 747 filled with fuel. Kind of like they planned for a terrorist 9/11 style attack.
He’ll wait for winter to cut the power grid of all power generated by fossil fuels and nuclear. Population reduction easy peasy.
Let him shut the power plants down. A couple summers in a row of outtages in the middle of heat waves should work wonders on the mood of the electorate.
“Any American who has the ability to make his own energy ought to begin doing so.”
Just putting this out there... the average leftist contains a significant amount of caloric energy that can pretty easily be converted into electricity.
Chop firewood. Install a wood-burning furnace by winter. Will Disco be back, too? Woodburning furnaces I can stand. Disco, however, is intolerable.
Biden has fond memories of Solyndra.
Smart meters, all electric homes, mandated electric cars, diminished power supply and on and on.
It’s all on purpose.
All credible and honest utility executives need to be consistently and continuously informing their boards, regulators, investors and customers of the risks associated with the unrealistic “transition” to renewables. The risks of significantly reduced reliability and increasing costs are very real and absolutely predictable. Despite uninformed politicians rhetoric, unachievable promises and absurd targets, the utility executives that just keep playing the green energy game and aren’t raising the red flags consistently will be the ones that are held accountable when the lights go out. All the John Kerry’s, Greta’s, climate activists, tree huggers, and IPCC, etc. will be silent about their deceit and lies, but along with the crooked politicians, will be pointing the finger of blame at the utility executives for failing in their responsibilities. American society cannot survive on fairy dust, unicorn farts, and dreams of total renewables for electric power supply. Base load sourcing of nuclear, natural gas and coal is essential.
“All credible and honest utility executives...”
There are none. I’ve worked for multiple ones.
If they are claiming the earth is boiling, then based on precedent of their track record in the past, we need to prepare for a brutal winter. JMO here, but I will be.
And even if it doesn't happen none of the preparations will be wasted.
Between famine, war, medical assisted murder, the grid, and “climate change” they are going to try to kill as many people as possible.
18 month food supply is a must for folks.
“Nuclear is needed, wind and solar are feel good generation.”
Agreed. I’d add natural gas to the “needed”.
Nonsense.
Hydro is solid in certain locations.
I say, do it!
Nothing will cause people to abandon this farcical climate crusade faster than food-spoiling power blackouts and utility bills that look like mortgage payments.
Everyone except the lowest information voters know biden hates them …..
“Hydro is solid in certain locations.”
Absolutely. Wish there were more locations.
