Trump’s triumph over the GOP remains incomplete
washingtonpost ^ | 07/31/2023 | Ramesh Ponnuru

Ohio’s government, with Republicans in charge of the legislature and the governor’s office, has cut taxes. It’s a dog-bites-man story, which is why you probably haven’t heard about it. But it’s worth noting because it runs counter to a common claim about Donald Trump’s Republican Party.

According to that argument, Republicans are well along in the process of jettisoning their old free-market orthodoxy. Trump buried Ronald Reagan’s party, with its fixation on limiting government and slashing entitlements. Among today’s conservatives, we’re told, all the energy is behind raising tariffs, breaking up big companies and establishing government-led industrial policies.

Except, Republican legislators keep doing what they always do: cutting taxes. Alabama is cutting the sales tax on food and is sending out tax rebates. Five states — Arizona, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa and Mississippi — are adopting flat taxes.

BullShiite, Ramesh. Trump has good reason for some tariffs, but none of your other accusations. Who are those Rs pushing for breaking up monopolies, or supporting govt. mandates. Not Trump. Not DeSantis. Not successful Govs.

The DC GOP IS the Swamp. 90+% of all GOP politicians we send to DC immediately get on the payroll. Long term, GOP swampers get more corrupt and back stabbing with each passing year (GOP Senate leaders excluding Rand Paul).

Alabama is cutting the sales tax on food

Sales tax on the basic necessities is immoral. There should be no tax on basic food, clothing, health care.

Consider the source. The Washington Post. Nobody reads them anymore. We amplify their reach by posting and reposting and quoting them.

From a pure free market perspectives tariffs are very destructive. The issue is the real world lack of real free markets especially in hostile markets with oppressive governments. This is where politics interferes with the free market but sometimes it is required to achieve political goals.

Just my opinion.

I am not sure if it’s still true but my native CA wasn’t taxing food. Georgia is taxed too much, including food but we’ll see the flat tax makes a dent in my tax burden.

The piece isn’t bad. It actually paints little difference between what Trump accomplished and what his enemies have tried to present. They say even his China trade policy didn’t go as far as Reagan era Soviet policy. They say for all the fuss and bother over the perception of Trump, Republicans have been Republicans in terms of policy. They referred to taxes and court nominees.

Free trade doesn’t just import goods, it imports outside influence. Unrestricted trade allows hostile foreign governments great influence in our country. We see this with China. At the opposite end of the spectrum heavy restrictions get heavy government influence which leads to internal corruption with regulations designed to stifle competition for those who buy influence.

Our founders tried to strike a balance by taxing imports but leaving domestic trade untouched.

There should be no tax on basic food, clothing, health care.

Sadly there are plenty of small towns where the local grocery chain is about the only source of income the city has. There was a move about 40 years ago in Oklahoma to remove groceries from the tax base and they found out in a hurry that small towns would go belly up if they did that, so they didn't.

Truth is that your home shouldn't be taxed either because as long as it is you can never truly own it. We pretty much get to take with us what we brought with us which is zip.

Yep, his beloved USA is ever changing and
has been since Columbus sailed the ocean
blue in 1492. And how did those changes
come about?

My guess is they came about by the powers
in charge at the time and changes keep
occurring as people/life/world changes.
An ongoing process be it good or bad.

This article is typical from NRO, which is utter garbage. Talk about what Reagan would be sick about, he’d have called WFB on the phone and told him to straight up those pansies opposing Trump.

But comparing Reagan times to Trump times is as useful as comparing Roosevelt’s times to Reagan’s. Different times lead to different morays and tactics. Reagan wouldn’t stand a chance in today’s bare knuckle politics; just as FDR wouldn’t have stood a chance in the age of TV, or Lincoln wouldn’t have stood a chance in the age of radio. Each was a man specifically for his time, as Trump is for his.

This red-dot bullshitter needs to gargle the Ganges. Got halfway through and it was a word salad that had been out in the Punjab sun too long.

This guy will be one of the first to go in Bezos' upcoming firing spree.

Yeah Hasheesh, Reagan tried to end the Department of Education but the CraPo wouldn't let him. GFY.
