The U.S. has for years been giving Iraq tens of billions of dollars to help with its finances on the specific condition that the country reduces its imports of gas and electricity from Iran eventually to zero.
Iran has wielded enormous power over Iraq for a very long time indeed through its various political, economic, and military proxies.
Iraq will pay with its own oil supplies for the gas and electricity that it has long been importing from Iran.
Ever since the U.S. officially ended its ‘combat mission’ in Iraq on 31 December 2021, it has been looking for a way back into the huge but still relatively untapped oil and gas regions of the country
...
Iraq knows this perfectly well and has sought since then to exploit this need for money from the U.S. whilst having no intention of allowing it to return in any meaningful way. Many analysts trace this reluctance back to the U.S.’s invasion of Iraq in 2003 or to its continued military presence there until 2011, but although neither of these factors helped the U.S.’s ambitions in Iraq,
...
U.S. is going through the five phases of grief associated with the death of its idea for Iraq : denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
...
U.S. State Department .. at the ‘denial stage’. When it reaches ‘acceptance’, it may well be that it follows the usual format of these dances and grants another waiver to Iraq to keep importing gas and electricity from Iran, including being allowed to pay for it through regular means, and gives it a few more billion dollars. At that point, it might also be expected that Iraq will drop the idea of the oil-for-gas deal with Iran – at least until that waiver runs out too.

As if the Biden Administration cares.
As if the Biden Administration cares.“
Exactly. It is amazing how clueless the so called news outlets are, they actually seem to be believe the rats operate with our country’s best interests at heart when it doesn’t even make the list
The more time passes, the worse this jackass looks. He was an idiot of the uniparty.
Someone on another thread once used Iraq as an example of a war the US won.
All those years.
All those billions.
All those lives.
All for nothing.
“Someone on another thread once used Iraq as an example of a war the US won.”
So we now know David French’s alt on FR.
Another Biden foreign policy accomplishment.
Book-pimping article that ignores that American energy independence under Trump II would crater oil futures (and shut off their grift) and the Iraqis will be less concerned with Iran than food. Perhaps Iran will farm Iraqis for food.
NeoCons told him he must invade Iraq.
Same NeoCons are involved with the Ukraine project (also failing).
NeoCons are a pestilence who are putting US in the graveyard.
Iran and Turkey have the upper hand with Iraq. That’s where Iraq gets it’s water. I wouldn’t be surprised if the neocons never once thought about that and the hammer those two countries have over Iraq.
They don’t. Most of DC doesn’t.
One person that did was Pres Donald Trump. I worked on a project in Iraq during his tenure. The Iraqi’s were supposed to fund it with a portion of their oil sales. They would tell the US that they didn’t make any money so DOD would fund it, using US taxpayer money. Iraqi’s got everything they wanted and more, we paid for it. Pres Trump questioned this arrangement.
Suffice it to say, the project is still going on, but on a smaller scale. Nothing but another shining example of money laundering, courtesy of the US taxpayer.
And that is just one of many projects like that.
You couldn’t be more right. In the beginning, many, me included, thought he was a legit guy that actually gave a damn. Nothing but a UNIPARTY, Globalist stooge, just like his dad.
