Putin promises grains, debt write-off as Russia seeks Africa allies

Russian President Vladimir Putin says his country and the African leaders attending a summit in St Petersburg have agreed to promote a multipolar world order and fight “neocolonialism” as he offered debt write-offs and grain to woo allies.

“Russia’s attention to Africa is steadily growing,” Putin said on Friday at the end of the two-day summit. The meeting was seen as a test of Moscow’s support in Africa, where Russia retains backing despite international isolation sparked by its war in Ukraine.

n Thursday, the Russian leader promised free grain to six African nations and assured them that Moscow was trying to avert a global food crisis nearly a week after withdrawing from an agreement that allowed Ukraine, one of the world’s largest grain producers, to export its farm products across the Black Sea.

The Russian leader also mentioned the “joint determination to counter neocolonialism, the practice of applying illegitimate sanctions and attempts to undermine traditional moral values”.

Representatives of 49 countries, including 17 heads of state, attended the summit in the Russian city.

Participants signed a joint declaration that called for “the establishment of a more just, balanced and stable multipolar world order, firmly opposing all types of international confrontation in the African continent”.

Al Jazeera’s Ali Hashem, reporting from St Petersburg, said the declaration is Russia’s “new initiative towards Africa”.

“There is a Russian plan for Africa,” he said, adding that there are “very ambitious initiatives” from Putin.

“Russia wants to gain Africa allies. This is why it’s initiating more and more towards Africa – to the extent that President Putin wants to … revive the Soviet era investments in Africa,” he said.

So Russia is trying to muscle in on the US’s ages-old freebee program of giant grants to third-world countries with no strings attached??

I wonder what happens to a country’s farmers when the market is suddenly flooded with free product? What I mean is, if the farmers grow crops, but can’t grow enough to meet demand, and someone comes along and floods the market with free crops, how will the farmers be able to make a profit to grow more crops in the future?

A very expensive proposition.

And when the two-week Special Imperialistic Operation fails and Putin has given away the national grain reserve...

Life is always hard for the basic Russian; so much for the dream of a washing machine.

I am certain that there will be strings, just like in the days of the Soviet Union

Russia isn’t going anywhere in Africa. The “important” parts of Africa were co-opted by China years ago.

Reading stuff like this article shows me that the pro-Russia media and pro-Russia people on this site are pretty gullible and ignorant of the current state of African politics.

The US has been playing catch up in Africa for a while. And we aren’t going to win.

The US has been playing catch-up in Africa for a while. And we aren’t going to win.

Africa is fifteen percent (15%)of the world's population. Add to that the population of China, the Middle East, Russia, India, Central Asia, and many countries in South America, all who are becoming connected with BRICS and/or Shanghai Corporation, and it is quite easy to see that the West is in a new and changing world. It's happening in real time right before our eyes.

It's high time we stopped bullying the world and come to terms with reality. That reality is that even with our higher GDP and standard of living, we no longer can control the world! In fact, with our over-the-top spending and debt, we are rapidly approaching our economic ability to do so. We are probably well past that point.

This is not 1945 when we were the BIG DOG. That's over now (or rapidly headed in that direction). Unless we make a change, and fast, we are quickly headed for disaster -- if not for ourselves for our children and grandchildren (our future).

Remember when Rome controlled the world? They crashed and burned. It took a thousand years to recover. And they were clearly not the first civilization in world history -- just one of the most recent.

Watch out.

—”reports are that Russia is having a bumper crop of grain.”

Mostly true.
But they are not in a strong financial position to give it away or derail existing commitments.

China purchases massive volumes of animal feed and food grains and seeds worldwide. Canada #1 IIRC.

China was Ukranes’s highest volume of sales.

“However, wheat is an exception to China’s increased buying from Russia, Bloomberg points out. Despite a surge in wheat imports by over 60% to about 6 million tons in the first four months of the year, Russia only supplied 30,000 tons. Despite Beijing’s announcement last year that it would allow wheat imports from all parts of Russia, trade has been impeded by issues like phytosanitary regulations, transportation challenges, and geographic constraints. The primary wheat-growing area in Russia is located in the south, near the Black Sea, a considerable distance from China.” https://t.ly/_dgT8

As you may have heard China has many hungry to feed.
And are not happy about any disruptions to their food supply.

The Soviets used to bring African college students to the USSR for education and indoctrination. Step one was to enroll them in an immersive Russian course. Mohammed and Dibo experience Communist Brotherhood in Moscow, or something like that.
