The massive roll-on, roll-off ship ablaze off the Dutch coast is transporting 500 electric vehicles. The ship's total cargo is around 3,800 vehicles, some of which are BMWs and Mercedes.
Shipping blog TradeWinds reported Japan's K Line is the operator of "Fremantle Highway." According to K Line's figures, there are 3,783 vehicles, of which 489 are EVs. Earlier estimates had the number of EVs at 25.
"The figure is far higher than first estimated and appears to raise the likelihood that a lithium-ion battery in an EV either caused the blaze in the 6,210-ceu Fremantle Highway (built 2013) or added to its severity," TradeWinds said.

Dutch broadcaster RTL said emergency responders were heard saying, "The fire started in the battery of an electric car."
The fire broke out late Tuesday night on board the vessel. Coastguard officials said the fire "could still burn for days." The latest known position of the ship was off the northern Dutch coast

When transporting electric cars powered by batteries - which when they catch fire can't be extinguished with water, or even by oxygen deprivation."
One significant risk for lithium-ion batteries is "thermal runaway" during a fire that is hard to extinguish and can spontaneously reignite. Yet another risk emerges as governments set decarbonization targets for the transportation sector/

Meaning there is only one solution
Let it burn 🔥
sink it. it’s great for the environment.
The EVs are working through early problems. The next generation is sure to have the problems solved. The EV Firebird and EV Phoenix projects are funded by SBF to solve all of the problems.
“some of which are BMWs and Mercedes”
Just last week I posted a story about a couple in my town that was provided a Mercedes EV for a courtesy car while the dealership did maintenance on their primary vehicle.
The night they got it, they parked it in the garage and sure enough over night it caught fire.
The kicker? It wasn’t even being charged, just went up for no apparent reason.
Kicker #2.....that model was under recall for system failures related to recognizing battery issues.
It shouldn’t have been on the road at all, much less been loaned out to a customer.
THAT is what you call a litigation lawyers’ wet dream.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention it burned their home almost to the ground......total loss.
Sounds like an insurance scam.
I’m going with “sarc” unless you direct otherwise. 😏🤣
Post the “ This is fine” gif.
;D
I wonder how many of these one off events it will take for someone to create legislation to ban EV vehicles for safety reasons.
The days of spectacular flaming Spanish Galleons has returned!
Did I really need to put a “sarc” tag? Really? I think you “NO”.
NO EVs, NO petroleum.
Hunker in your bunker until the WEF makes you limit your bug consumption and starve.
4 da Erf......
“Make it rain!”
Those names remind me of the 18650 batteries I got via eBay, brand name “Ultra Fire”...
Pick it’s resting place and tow it if possible.
Insurance for RO/RO ships carrying electric vehicles is surely going to spike after this. Which will spike the price of the EV’s or else the manufacturers will stop shipping them.
The Mercedes Bonfire.....burning up the roads everywhere!
You almost had me ‘til “Firebird” and “Phoenix”. ROFL! Well played.
Yep. That happened in the very affluent town of Nocatee......for you in case your not familiar, think Palm Valley area....west of the intercoastal.
