Ukrainian forces pressed their counteroffensive through the Russian-occupied southeast on Thursday, capturing the village of Staromaiorske in a campaign to drive a wedge through Russian defensive positions.
The counteroffensive has focused on securing villages on the southward push and areas around the eastern city of Bakhmut, taken by Russian forces in May after months of battles.
Ukrainian officials have reported slow, steady progress.
Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged intensified Ukrainian attacks over the last few days, but said they had made no headway.

See cluster bombs work. We should have given them to Ukraine right from the start. Could have saved us $100+ Billion dollars.
Ooohhh. A villiage! A strategic village!
There must be a hovel in this village with an old lady that can cook.
Can’t imagine there is much left of this village. Had to destroy the village to save it I guess.
No, they found the weak spot in the Russian line and punched through. Putin obliged them by firing the general who was in charge of that sector and who was complaining about the lack of manpower, ammo, and basic supplies. Thanks Vlad!
Like Bakhmut?
This war was never about taking territory, it was always about attrition.
It is a proxy war that went far longer than it ever had to.
Taking a village. Big whoop. How many had to die for it?
I read on another site last night that the Russians have a major attack in progress elsewhere.
I looked up the population.
Not listed anywhere I could find.
Given the level of excitement and press coverage, I think it’s propaganda.
Bakhmut is bit more than a little village full of villains (Norman word for Anglo Saxon townsfolk whom they despised). Bakhmut is, or was, an industrial city.
This “strategic village” was probably populated by 3 old ladies and a pack of feral dogs.
Strategic village?:) Okay.
So explain the Russian attempts at annexation (especially from territory they’ve subsequently been expelled, like Kherson Oblast) and how that fits into your assertion that it’s not about ‘taking territory’.
I’m guessing that is an accurate description.
Yet article after article published, and Zeepers marching around in parades.
And so it goes…
I never predict the war outcome. It appears at the moment the Ukrainian continued pressure is slowly paying off, and they repelled vsrious Russian attacks.
I guess it will just be too tiresome to remind the people here who screamed and yelled that Ukraine was finished, their army was eliminated, no way Vlad will give up whatever, on and on.
And I see they haven’t stopped anyway.
Russia is losing territory, but this is inches.
We can talk about how Russia is still losing,
This war was about taking territory.
First, Putin tried to decapitate Ukraine and make it a complete vassal - on the path to assimilation (like Belarus)
That Failed.
Now, after 4 more failures, he’s trying to desperately hold on to the ill-gotten territory he has gained.
It started out as an SMO and they wanted a deal. A deal was in the works to stick to the Minsk agreements and that was killed by Boris Johnson.
So we have what we see now. Pity it is.
I know you Zeepers get all wee we’ed up over it, but it is what it is. No use more people dying.
Supposedly an end is in the works quietly. We shall see.
Done, and I won’t continue to argue.
Not true.
