Ohio voters to decide whether to protect abortion rights in November

Voters in Ohio will decide in November whether to enshrine the right to abortion in their state constitution, after state officials on Tuesday confirmed abortion rights supporters had gathered enough signatures to place the question on the ballot.

The measure will be closely watched by groups on both sides of the abortion debate, as activists consider pursuing referendums in other states after the U.S. Supreme Court last year stripped away national abortion rights.

Ohio is likely to be the only state to vote on abortion rights this fall.

The outcome may not rely on a simple majority. The state's Republican-controlled legislature, aiming to make it more difficult for the referendum to succeed, approved a separate ballot question asking voters to raise the threshold of voters required to amend the state constitution to 60%, instead of 50%.

That measure will be decided at a special election on August 8. A USA TODAY Network/Suffolk University of Ohio poll taken in early July found 58% of Ohio voters favor protecting abortion rights, with 32% opposed.

The Ohio secretary of state's office said Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights, the coalition backing the proposed abortion measure, submitted 495,938 valid signatures from 55 counties, above the minimum qualifying levels of 413,487 signatures and 44 counties.

"Now that the petition drive is complete, we're eager to continue the campaign to enshrine those rights in Ohio's Constitution and ensure that Ohioans will never again be subject to draconian reproductive health care policies imposed by extremists," two of the group's leaders, Lauren Blauvelt and Lauren Beene, said in a statement.

The August vote is crucial. Much more than abortion is at stake. It’s common sense that it should take 60% to amend the state constitution but the rats know that election is probably more important than November’s and the Hollywood creeps are pouring money into it.

And 5 minutes after the vote is finalized the abortion industry will find an Osama Obama appointee to overturn it.

After finally getting Roe overturned, are we going to sit back and let liberals enshrine abortion in every state constitution from coast to coast?

Yes.

My understanding is that many claim a soul becomes part and parcel at conception. My question is since these souls are sinless, wouldn’t they be assured a place in heaven? Same for the stillborn and those that die in the womb. Aren’t they better off than those born into a sinful world and fall prey to it?

By that reasoning, we should also think nothing of killing the already born innocents up to the age of 7, which is widely considered the age of reason at which time moral culpability begins. If God has allowed a human person to be conceived, he has made that person to live, not to be destroyed because of our sinfulness.

You don’t understand what’s going on here. This is an initiative to put the right to abortion in the state Constitution. Why would an Obama appointee want to overturn it?

Yikes...I missed “rights”. I thought it was an attempt to reign in such butchery.

We lost in Kansas and Kentucky. The other side is very good in their advertising and activism while our side in recent years sits on their behinds and keeps their wallets closed.

What did everyone think was supposed to happen when Roe was overturned?!?

It becomes a states rights issue. Now Republicans are trying last minute and ham hands to change the rules for adapting amendments changes to the state constitution. Increasing the threshold from 50 to 60%. The left is all ready with their abortion petitions for November, after they defeat the weak Republicans.

Lmao!! Republicans took your money for decades to promise to overturn Roe, Trump, whom they hated, actually makes it happen, and now they have no plan or ability to do anything with it. Shades of overturning obamacare once you give them the money and the majority!!😂😂

While I don’t condone the killing of the born, it’s something to consider regarding the unborn. I can only find one scripture where it specifically references a soul entering a body, and that’s Adam. That to me represents when we all take that first breath. Since for anyone else its never specifically addressed, it’s quite possible we are wrong in our thinking.

It becomes a states rights issue.

Ok. So we should allow the left to abort their babies. Mormons, Amish, Orthodox Jews, Muslims are not going to abort their babies. Demographics are destiny.

Israel is a great example of that.

It all started in January 2019, the run off of the Georgia election when Perdue and loeffler were up for those special elections. People said don’t vote for them as they were RINOs. We lost both and haven’t done well since. That was a stupid strategy as it took away the majority. Republicans can be so dumb.

I don't believe that the Scriptures intend the unique creation of Adam to be a lesson on when human life begins for the rest of mankind. We do know from science--have known for a long time-- that a unique human being comes into being at conception. It has it's own human DNA and if allowed to develop normally will grow by stages to become a mature human being. While the time of ensoulment has been debated for centuries (my Church teaches it occurs at conception), even if we are reduced to admitting we don't know, it is always better to err in favor of it being a human being

not an expert on the subject. But people are saying now they won’t bring a child into a world like this. Well the world will change how many times in the baby’s lifetime. So to deny life now eliminates the option the world

I think that’s statement from people is a cop out.

Everything old is new again. My son was born in 82. We heard the same things back then. The old ‘I’m so happy for you, but I’d be concerned about the world they would be born into’.

Generally speaking, if one cannot know for sure, error is neither godly nor ungodly. In the specific case that we are discussing, if you have good reason to believe something is a human life, but are not sure, it’s better to treat it as if were a human life.

If one sees a bag lying in the road that is such a size and shape that it could be either a baby inside or a bunch of old clothes, it’s better not to run over it than to run over it.
