UPDATE 2-Ukraine's Zelenskiy urges EU to ensure end to "unacceptable" farm goods restrictions

KYIV, July 24 (Reuters) - President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called on the European Union on Monday to ensure that an "unacceptable and clearly non-European" ban on Ukrainian grain imports to five countries is lifted by a Sept. 15 deadline.

The five central European countries want the EU ban extended at least until the end of the year. The ban is set to expire on Sept. 15.

In his nightly video address, delivered after a meeting with government officials, Zelenskiy said there could be no question of extending the restrictions beyond the deadline.

"We believe that the European side will fulfill its obligations regarding this date, when the temporary restrictions will cease to apply," Zelenskiy said.

"Any extension of these restrictions is entirely unacceptable and clearly un-European. Europe has the institutional capacity to act more rationally than closing this or that border to this or that type of good."

Ukraine, he said, was "actively working with everyone to find a solution that is in line with the spirit of our Europe".

The president had earlier written on the Telegram messaging app that any extension was "unacceptable in any form".

The EU in May allowed Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia to ban domestic sales of Ukrainian wheat, maize, rapeseed and sunflower seeds, while permitting transit of such cargoes for export elsewhere.

Sounds like their ‘friendship’ has limits. Ukraine may want to keep this in mind as they try to expand the Neocon War to NATO.

Oh, like Holland, Ireland etc.? The EU can go to hell backwards.

Always. That was a primary function of the original European Community and Common Market. Most of Europe produces agricultural surpluses in some area or another. Every country has some kind of farm income support scheme.

That part about the Netherlands is very new.
An extreme outlier.
But there HAVE been production restrictions, like acreage (hectarage) limits. The purpose however was to keep prices high, not enviro-whatever.

Sorry, it’s the NEW ORDER being phased in by the EU overlords as part of their campaign to weaken and destroy the West. It’s anything but an “outlier”.

If the Ukes were not such Nazis, Thieves, Crooks and Grifters, their neighbor nations could do business with 'em.

However they always have been, and only are worse because of Zelensky and the Maidan Coup.

Shake hands with a Ukrainian, then check to see how many of your fingers he stole.

If Russian Federation countries were doing this, wouldn’t the headline be Russians Act to Starve Africans?

This is common Euro/EU policy.
Most countries there are sensitive about their farmers.

true, but the cost of Ukraine grain will no longer be cheap if they have to ship it by rail all the way to euroweenieland.

They are already shipping by rail, to Gdansk and Constanta, and probably elsewhere, and they’ve been doing that all along.

World prices are world prices. There is no “discount” that matters in commodity-world.

Some Eastern European countries ( Poland) have blocked imports of Uke wheat to protect their own farmers…and because of contamination

Pesticides ….and maybe some cluster bomblets ( jk)

Love how Zelensky is issuing demands to them

EU is trying to work out a sweet deal to ship grain through but not to those countries

Their own farmers have always been “first”.
The Polish PiS, for one, has always been in large part the rural party. And that’s typical in the EU.

Very much so in France, to begin with.

No, Tariffs increase the price of Wheat being exported. They are in place to protect the local countries farmers and some countries actually BAN wheat/farm products because import prices would be lower.Ocean shipping is far cheaper than rail, depending on the distribution point and also the Port location. rail shipment originating on the western part of Ukraine into the nearby countries is cheaper than sending it by rail to the eastern seaports, but not if the destination is in Africa or Brittain etc.
