The lengthy absence from public view of China's Foreign Minister Qin Gang has sparked furious online speculation, while once again highlighting China's secrecy.

The 57-year-old has not been seen in public for 23 days - his last reported engagements were on 25 June.

Appointed to his post last December, Mr Qin was seen as a trusted aide of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

As one of the best known faces of the Chinese government, Mr Qin's prolonged absence has not only been scrutinised by diplomats and China watchers, but also ordinary Chinese people.

When asked about his whereabouts on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said she had no information to provide.

The Chinese Foreign minister and former Ambassador to the US, Qin Gang, appears to have evaporated. He hasn't been seen in public for almost a month and has had all his meetings cancelled, with the Foreign Ministry providing some vague health concerns as the reason.

Speculation appears to be centering on some kind of affair or "personal indiscretion," but that doesn't seem to be a likely reason for somebody quite as high-profile as he is to disappear. Pure speculation on my part, but my read of Qin Gang is that he's more interested in constructive engagement with other countries than the Wang Yi style of pure pressure. If that's actually true, then this could be Wang Yi reasserting more control over the Foreign Ministry which would in turn be a bad signal for the nascent discussions between US and China.

Maybe they don't realize what "inscrutable" means.

A pretty female reporter who interviewed the already married Qin Gang when he was US Ambassador recently had a baby.

She named the baby Er Qin ( translated Qin number 2 or the second Qin ). She was a lead TV reporter of the Phoenix Media Group in Hong Kong. She has also disappeared from the public.

Make of that what you will but the denizens of Chinese Social Media are naughtily winking and nudging each other virtually.

snip...”Curiously, around the time the news that Dong had defected hit, Beijing recalled Ambassador to the US Cui Tiankai, replacing him with a Xi Jinping confidant. Intelligence community sources told RedState that Qin Gang, the new Ambassador, was sent to the United States specifically to attempt to shut down any investigation into information Dong brought forward. “

China (or at least HK) is abuzz that he had a mistress, who was a HK TV presenter. The rumor also is that she recently gave birth to his son. Qin Gang rose quickly in the Foreign Ministry ranks due to Xi Jinping

Qin Gang, Wang Yi and now another Mao pops up. They may be inscrutable but the names give me a chuckle.
