American soldier Travis King had shown signs of possibly defecting from the Army nearly a year before he fled into North Korean territory, telling military officials while serving in South Korea that he would not “return to post or America.”
***
It was not the first sign of trouble for the Wisconsin native, who was facing assault allegations over a fight at a club on Sept. 25.
[On] Sept. 4, while serving at Camp Bonifas near the southern end of the Demilitarized Zone that separates North and South Korea, King skipped out on his daily formation and took off to a nearby city, ***
When the base managed to reach King, who served as a cavalry scout, he “refused to return to post or America,” a U.S. official told the outlet.
*** Asked whether Pyongyang might torture King, Blinken said: “There are certainly concerns based on what we’ve seen in the past and the way that North Korea has treated those it’s detained.”
King, an Army Private 2nd Class, was scheduled to return to the United States on Monday but managed to slip past his military escort and was seen wearing civilian clothes during a tour of the Joint Security Area inside the DMZ.
US officials said King had made a “deliberate decision” to enter North Korea, but have yet to explain how he managed to outsmart his handlers at Incheon International Airport — and make it all the way to the village of Panmunjom inside the DMZ the next day.
King, who reportedly shouted “ha ha ha” during his mad dash into North Korea, was heading to Fort Bliss after spending nearly two months at a South Korean detention center over the assault charge.
He faced a dishonorable discharge from the Army over his conviction, a defense source said.

wait up now, his mom says he would not do this.
They were too poor to afford apostrophes, ‘q’, ‘j’ or ‘x’ when they named him.
Yeah
That should be 184,000 won not 584,000.
I am in dis belief. 50 years ago, 1 dollar was worth 400 won, now it is worth 1286? What the hell happened?
I bet the MPs couldn’t escort him to the plane. Probably got stopped at security and couldn’t go any further because they didn’t have a ticket.
Thank 9/11 security theater for that.
Law of unintended consequences.
My friends do any of you think any US government official can openly sympathize with what the rest of us Americas think? The guy’s trash and they’ll get him back-public pressure. He’s now a ‘victim’. Obama traded Bergdahl for 5 terrorists. Was Bergdahl really an outstanding troop? The POTUS has to put this embarrassing issue away. That means ‘get it done’ and make the US look bad.
Maybe they will feed him to the pack of dogs. This guy mustn’t be too smart. He willingly entered a country that imprisons its population. I bet he’s enjoying himself right now.
Let him stay in the DPRK.
I don’t know what this guy’s MOS was. He could have been a grunt (infantry) without access to sensitive/classified information. Or he could have been in, for example, INSCOM (Intelligence and Security Command) where he might have knowledge of highly classified information that the NORKS would love to get from him.
When he made those statements he should have been sent back immediately. Why wasn’t he??
The more I hear about him, the more he sounds like a nut case
Guess Travis King never heard of Otto Warmer.
Let him pay with his health, assuming he ever gets back. His rodeo, his clowns.
I’d love to be a fly on the wall when he tries to slug some North Korean official. He’ll find that they don’t coddle thugs there.
I ask in ignorance; are privates second class (with apparent problems) routinely given access to highly classified info?
Most North Koreans are starving. This will be one of those times when a Pygmy cannibal is eaten. /spit
Right you are! He is a faggot.
He does kind of have that look about him. Maybe the twin light sources make him look like he is wearing eye shadow. But these days maybe eye shadow is OK
Makes me wonder if we have any detained Nork spies that the Dems want to trade, like they did with the Iranians caught in Iraq, with Taliban to the Haqqanis, and with the Cuban terrorist cell, etc.
Convicted spies are like the emergency oil reserves... whenever Democrats get into power they cannot wait to trade them off.
