Seattle climate activists roost in old cedar tree to prevent it from being cut down for new housing

SEATTLE (AP) — With ropes, a harness, a hammock and a bucket pulley system, masked activists in Seattle have taken residence in the branches of an old, thick cedar tree to prevent it from being cut down to make way for new homes.

The protest on a private lot is the latest episode highlighting tensions behind tree policy in Seattle as climate change increases temperatures and urban canopy decreases.

Its age is not known, but activists have estimated it could be as much as 200 years old. The Snoqualmie Indian Tribe is seeking to have the tree preserved for its archaeological significance, saying that Native Americans shaped its branches generations ago to distinguish it as a trail marker.

The protesters have declined to give their names, citing concerns about retaliation. They said they support new housing, but not at the expense of the tree.

“We have to win this tree. We have to win because Luma is setting the tone for every other tree that’s under threat in Seattle,” one said from the tree. “We have to show that we mean business.”

Easy solution. Carefully cut it down and truck it to the casino to put on display forever.

It’s on private land, right? Arrest them for trespassing. Demand the Marshall remove them at once. If they don’t you can then cut down the tree with them in it.

Pay the landowner for the land around the tree...Build a high wall around it and place guards there...let no food or water be delivered...Stand and watch them fall out as they starve...

Why pay the landowner anything? It’s his land and his tree. He can put guards around it and starve the idiots out as well as anyone, if he chooses to.

It is evidently for sale or has been offered because the story says it is to be cut down to make way for new homes...Probably sale didn’t go through because of the tree hangers...

As PNW Cedar trees go, that one is not so old and and is small.

It has two stems and will split and die in some wind storm.

These people don’t work.

Most of them have trust funds which support them in the life style they are accustomed to. One of them I knew got $43K a month.

The rest are hired from newspaper and internet ads for so much am hour, bail paid, lawyer supplied free.

When not protesting, they hang around the local CO-OP where they spend their SNAP benefits; participating in other non-productive activities - they are famous for impromptu music festivals, pottery making, and childish paintings that are little more than cartoons, and other artsy-fartsy things.

We had such a marked tree at the edge of town. Had a sign for generations. This past winter it fell forward. People were sad. So, plan around the tree and build the damn housing. It isn’t that hard.

By the way, such trees marked for trails are pretty rare.
