Donna Hansbrough, 68, was punched in the face multiple times while attempting to stop shoplifters from stealing over $2,000 worth of merchandise from Lowe's. The home improvement company then fired Hansbrough for violating their policy.
WSAV reported Takyah Berry, Joseph Berry, and Jarmar Lawton allegedly went inside Lowe's and loaded multiple items into different shopping carts. Police say they would then exit the store without paying for the merchandise. Hansbrough grabbed onto the shopping cart belonging to the female suspect, Takyah:
Police say that Hansbrough never made physical contact with any of the thieves, only grabbing the cart. According to the sheriff’s office, one of the individuals, Joseph Berry, then struck Hanbrough in the face three times before leaving the store. Both Joseph Berry and Takyah Berry, who are uncle and niece, are still at large.
The attack left Hansbrough with bruises on her face. She had worked for Lowe's for 13 years.
Retail companies have taken the position their employees should no longer work there if they attempt to stop brazen shoplifters. Lululemon CEO Calvin McDonald told CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" in June he stood by firing two employees in Georgia after they called the police on shoplifters and "engaged" with them.
"In this particular case, we have a zero tolerance policy that we train our [employees] on around engaging during a theft. Why? Because we put the safety of our team, of our guests, front and center. It's only merchandise...The [employees] knowingly broke the policy, engaged with the thieves...that was what resulted in the termination," McDonald said.
"That was my sole income," former employee Rachel Rogers said, "So, I did have to file for unemployment and use all of my savings to pay for my car payments, car insurance payments, my dog's food, my food."
The other former employee said she has four children to provide for.
#3 Home Depot has more stuff. A new ACE Hardware that recently opened also has lots of stuff. Lowes is 1/ mile from me and is nice but lacking in tools.
If you are lucky to have a Fleet Farm or Menards then those are other options.
The reason they are firing her is because they don’t want to talk about the perpetrators. None of the stories say anything about the perpetrators. It might not look good if the perpetrators are teens.

No society can continue when theft at this scale is tolerated.
This story is more evidence the USA is disintegrating into anarchy.
This is national advertising for more thieves to show up and steal everything they can get their hands on. Nobody will stop them.
This turns America into a land in which those who are honest and who pay for merchandise are fools and suckers.

What would they do if they caught an Employee of 13 years taking $25.00 in cash to use for groceries for their family at home because they didn’t have any food at home ? I’m going to say that they would call the cops on them...
I’m in Moorseville, NC and there’s 3 low-life retail stores within 12 miles AND Corporate Offices/Media Center/IT Hardware Repair are less than a mile from home.
Moorseville has given them HUGE Tax breaks and free reign of the local streets for their employees to take up space riding their stupid overpriced bicycles while wearing their goofy spandex crap and teardrop helmets (which makes them look like they should be on the end of a fishing line as a lure being trolled in the Lake) screwing up TRAFFIC DAILY !!!

You can always tell the people who, in their whole life, have not once ever stood up against bullying, injustice, or criminal behavaior. The “Let Joe do it” types. And people wonder why the country is in the shape it’s in. Fat, stupid, lazy and afraid of losing some of your property rather that standing up is no way to go through life. If you can’t make a stand you’re worthless.

It’s a liability issue. An employee liability issue more than a perp liability issue. Hire a security force to do that work. I’ve seen literal security squads at big box stores in heavy neighborhoods.
The cops aren’t going to do it. They’ll haul the trash away though. The courts will have to change their belived catch and tekease programs to have the desired effect.
Why should I even pay for anything there?????
Can I walk out as well with my purchases without paying for them?????
If they are not going to hold everyone to the same standard - honest customer- then why even exist???
So, my prices for their items will be going up astronomically so these yutes can continue to steal????

I would guess that Lowes is like every other employer and finds it hard to find young employees much less young employees that are as reliable and hardworking as one of this woman’s generation.
