The explanation I read was that the people in the barrios were finally able to fight back against the gangs of thugs who ruled neighborhoods by murdering any opposition. A growing feature in our own major cities, (those with harsh gun laws in particular). Venezuela is a stellar example of the end-stage of this kind of leftist social control.

I’ve yet to observe any of these experts demonstrate safe gun handling much less able to converse intelligently on any facet of firearms.
As for Brazil, I believe the expression, “An armed society is a polite society” applies.
