Dr Jordan Peterson discusses how to win the culture war, with insights from Soviet and Nazi dissidents who stood up against tyranny and compares their struggles with clampdowns on free speech today. He sits down with The Telegraph’s Steven Edginton in a wide-ranging discussion from why Britain was a miracle for the world to if he is addicted to Twitter:
On the culture wars:
“The right lacks vision. They play a rearguard game. They don't have a compelling story to tell young people. And because they're conscientious, conservatives are conscientious, it's easy to hoist them on the petard of guilt. And the psychopathic narcissists of the radical left are unbelievably good at that.”
On the personal versus the political:
“I think you have to get your psychological house in order before you can be even remotely effective politically in the fundamental sense. Otherwise, you're just a tool of ideology or your own ego.”
On Britain:
“English common law is a complete bloody miracle … what a phenomenal accomplishment. And so, yes, I think that makes Britain singular and worthy of tremendous admiration … It's a country that's suffering from far too much guilt at the moment.”
On Twitter:
“Twitter isn't optional, it's how I sample the culture. Is it a biased sample? Probably.”
On slavery:
“It was the British who decided hands down that slavery was wrong and then did something about it. And that is documented historical reality.”
On the EU and France:
“A lot of the centralising tendency that's characteristic of the EU can be laid at the foot of the same spirit that motivated the French, the French revolutionaries … I see the French Revolution in itself as a reflection of something deeper, which is the continuing manifestation of the spirit of Cain.”

He’s always worth listening to.
If you want to beat the left, you have to beat them with aggression. If they come at you about being a racist, I just tell them that I’d rather be a racist than a liberal. I use their historical record against them.
They’re not do-gooders and idealists. At least not at the top of the food chain.
I strongly suspect that at the top, and where the money starts, it’s coming from those interests that want the west to fall, or at least be weakened.
The do-gooders, bleeding-hearts, and idealists, they are useful idiots. Very useful, but not for the right reasons, despite what they may think. They only employ their brain for ‘the cause’ and they don’t bother to considered the consequences, intended or unintended. They are clever when they have to be, and mind-numbingly blocked and defensive when they need to be.
My family, and I myself, have worked TOO hard all our lives to have guilt about ANYTHING! Sorry.
“It was the British who decided hands down that slavery was wrong and then did something about it.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That is a monumental moral accomplishment.
It is so perverse how the ones being guilt tripped by the Left are a) the least deserving of being guilt tripped and b) the most susceptible to being guilt tripped.
"The right lacks vision. They play a rearguard game. They don't have a compelling story to tell young people."
We do. But among those few who know the story, they don't want to tell it.
"On slavery:
It was the British who decided hands down that slavery was wrong and then did something about it. And that is documented historical reality.""
It most certainly is not. America owns the story of abolition, not the British. In the early to mid 1770s, Britain was obstructing and downplaying any attempts in our colonies to do away with slavery.
It was the BritishAmericans who decided hands down that slavery was wrong and then did something about it, only to be stopped by the British.
THAT is documented historical reality. Britain has her own issues to deal with over there on that side of the Atlantic. But for those of us here in the states, we need to remember to teach what is contained in the Declaration of Independence and the fact remains. Britain treated us terribly. That included our attempts to halt slavery.
The British do not own abolitionism. Americans do.
The British, however, were invaluable in abolishing the trade on the high seas, now back bad as ever, if not worse.
That is all well and good what Britain did on the high seas after a few centuries of both transporting and directly slave-driving in its colonial plantations, but it goes to show just how badly Americans know their(our) own history. It’s a reflection of what I know most don’t want to hear. We are all a product of the manipulation of history progressives have been doing since well before the 1920s.
But to stick with the main point that I stated. Britain does not own abolitionism. America does. If more young Americans knew this fact it would be a lot harder for progressives to do their guilt tripping.
That Declaration is just sitting there, it’s a gold mine waiting to be used and nobody wants the gold.
Thanks for posting.
Historians used to blame American slavery on Britain. When did that change?
Psychopathic narcissists... Thank you Dr Peterson.
“The British do not own abolitionism. Americans do.”
Pax Brittania, which includes America owns abolitionism. WHAT DISTINGUISHES THE WEST REGARDING SLAVERY IS THAT THE WEST TOOK PROACTIVE STEPS TO END IT. Wilberforce in the early 19th century forced the end of the practice at the same time abolitionist forces in the US were working against it as well.
They are not liberals. That appellation is obsolete. They are left-wing radicals. Leftards for short. We are the real liberals. You’re right about being aggressive. They have to be kept perpetually on the defensive. Physical violence, however, is the first resort of the incompetent, according to Asimov.
You want aggression? Coopt satyagraha, civil rights songs and direct action. Use it to protest the DC Gulag of the J6 dissidents. Use it to protest their heinous grooming of children. Go back to Thoreau’s Civil Disobedience. Refuse to pay school taxes en masse, and start up educational cooperatives. If they try grabbing properties for refusing to pay school taxes, form human chains attached to the property, break out the guitars and sing the folks songs. “If four people do it, they’ll think it’s a movement.”
It isn’t nice to block the doorways.
It isn’t nice to go to jail.
There are nicer ways to do it,
But the nice ways always fail...
They might try to ignore it in the MSM, but they no longer have a monopoly on communication.
“If you want to beat the left, you have to beat them with aggression.”
Ridicule works too. They are so very much concerned about what people think of them, that laughing at them almost physically hurts them.
Oh, yeah. That was Rush’s stock in trade and others are now carrying his torch. Gutfeld, The Bee...
“Physical violence, however, is the first resort of the incompetent, according to Asimov.”
Yeah, sure, but I bet Asimov lost a lot of lunch money over the years.
I do like all your ideas about civil disobedience though. I’ve been saying that is the next natural step since 2020 happened. But conservatives have 2 problems doing that:
1) they are all spread out, not concentrated in big cities where you can whistle up a mob on a moment’s notice
2) they all have jobs and families to feed so they can’t protest for days or weeks at a time, which is often necessary, and most can’t risk going to jail.
Plus there is almost zero support systems on the right for protestors. Nobody’s dipping into the bail fund to get you out. Nobody’s hiring a lawyer to defend you. If you want people to put their lives, their livelihoods, their good name on the line, they have to believe you aren’t about to drop them like a used tissue once you get what you want from them.
That only works on the weak minded. I subscribe to the philosophy prescribed by Benjamin Franklin: “Fart proudly, for you are an American”.
Ignoring the evil vile from your critics is required to serve God. We don’t serve him when we entertain evil vile.
I rather think he ate the bullies’ lunch. He was dangerously smart, even as a young ‘un.
