Cause: Donald Trump.
This brand of moderate Republican governor has been edging ever-closer to extinction for some time. Larry Hogan was term-limited out in Maryland last year. Charlie Baker opted for a $3 million-per-year paycheck over a brutal primary against a Donald Trump-endorsed candidate in Massachusetts.
Now Chris Sununu is calling it quits in New Hampshire.
Fiscally conservative but more socially moderate Republican governors have long defied electoral odds in blue and purple states. That’s proved particularly true in the liberal bastion of New England, where three of the region’s six governors were Republicans and executives of Baker and Bill Weld’s ilk ran Massachusetts almost uninterrupted for 30 years.
Until now.
Trump’s rise accelerated the Republican Party’s hard-right march, complicating the primary calculus for moderates. Democrats capitalized on both Baker and Hogan’s departures and on anger towards both Trump and the Supreme Court to win back corner offices in Massachusetts and Maryland last year. On Wednesday, race raters reacted to Sununu’s pending departure by shifting the New Hampshire governor’s contest to a toss-up. Democrats now see the state as their best chance for a gubernatorial flip in 2024.

Trump isn't at all "hard-right". He's a populist, or a counter-elite. (Counter-elitism terrifies the elites, who can see where this is going.)

What’s his “extreme” opinions ? Border security ? Even democrats used to run on that. Though , admittedly , Dems (and republicans) didn’t want to actually do anything about illegals they did come out and say it.

But every time some, what the press considers a moderate Democrat, retires or loses they run some set of stories along this line.
I stopped reading at the words “democrat leaning”. <— democrat leaning is a lie. Americans are overwhelmingly conservative and Americans vote conservative. The media lies to US in order to steal and rig elections!!!!
Moderate Republicans NEVER deliver for the grass roots. They only facilitate Democrat agendas for a price. So tell me why I should mourn the loss of useless appendages. I shouldn’t. I don’t.
Sununu isn’t a moderate republican. He was a leftist republican. He wouldn’t have been elected if he was moderate. The Massatwochits people moved up here and turned us into democrat state where even if you’re a republican, you’re democrat lite.
We’re thinking of Tennessee as our next destination. Lovely down there. Great freedom loving people.
