Ukraine can't advance with tanks alone and is coming up short on what it really needs to break Russia's defenses
Business Insider via Yahoo ^ | July 19th, 2023 | Ryan Pickrell

Ukraine's top general says even advanced tanks alone are not cutting it in the counteroffensive.

Mines are a big problem for Ukraine's forces, but that's not all there is to it, one warfare expert said.

Ukrainian forces are struggling to break Russian lines with combined arms operations.

Ukraine received a lot of Western armor, like Leopard tanks and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, ahead of its big counteroffensive, but that isn't enough to break through Russian defenses. There's more Ukraine still needs, and it's not just more equipment.

As one expert told Insider previously, Leopards are very capable tanks, but no one should expect a "silver bullet." Similar observations were made about the other armored systems, and that seems to be the case as Ukraine's military leadership laments the ability of Russian land mines to stop armor in its tracks.

Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces, recently told The Washington Post that "you can no longer do anything with just a tank, with some armor, because the minefield is too deep, and sooner or later, it will stop and then it will be destroyed by concentrated fire."

In some cases, Ukrainian troops are leaving the much-sought-after armored vehicles behind and attempting to advance on foot. In other cases, offensive movement has slowed to a crawl or ground to a halt as Ukraine signals its forces need much more to slice through Russia's defenses.

snip

Franz-Stefan Gady, an expert on war at the Center for New American Security who recently visited Ukraine, reported that "this is an infantryman's fight" with artillery support along the front, meaning "progress is measured by yards/meters and not km/miles given reduced mobility."

The big offensive is a dud.

It will create some real fireworks as Ukraine and its western benefactors get frustrated, but little to no movement of the line.

The west will tire of its new media plaything and Ukraine will be left to resume its role as a Russian vassal.

Well, at least part of this is nonsense. Ukraine did NOT receive “a lot” of Western armor. The quantities they received are not even significant vs. the scale of this war.

The big offensive is a dud.

The Ukrainians should have kept attacking last fall before Putin had to call for mobilization of more troops in Russia. Since then, they've had 9 months to fortify their defenses and to pour in 300,000 conscripts to the front.

I don’t know what’s going on. I don’t trust either camp’s reports. Based on how we know Russia fought for this same terrain against tanks and mechanized infantry in World War Two, I’d say Russian artillery is carrying the day.

It’s like NATO hasn’t planned a thunk. The increments in weaponry suggests to me absolutely no strategy. If they were going to join this war as they clearly have they should have given what they waited to give immediately. This is such a waste of money....their strategy is just a long costly war...heck of a plan.

“Ukraine can’t advance with tanks alone”

Funny we only hear this AFTER Ukraine (meaning NATO) gets its ass kicked.

In a few months we’ll see “Ukraine can’t advance with F-16’s alone”, after NATO gets a taste of S-400s.

(sorry for the Neocon Supporters, but I’m just stating facts, as you guys have been WRONG about every Western ‘Wonder-Weapon’ so far...and it’s all due to one simple reason - you sat on your fat asses while Russia, and China for that matter, MODERNIZED and rolled out new weapons)

True. Britain gave Ukraine 10 Challenger II tanks and then told Ukraine not to use them. The tank transfer was purely for virtue signaling.

Joe Biden is the President. An Indian is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Zelensky needs to sign the cease fire and call it a day.

I know he's not going to sign the cease fire so the war is still going on. I wonder if it'll eventually become a "frozen conflict". Skirmishes and drone attacks and cruise missiles. Nothing like Bakhmut, that was a battle on the WWI scale.

A non-psychotic, non-perverted, non-globalist, non-puppet leader who doesn’t like seeing millions of his citizens killed and trying to get the U.S. to trigger WW3. Voldemort Zelensky needs to be strung up by the genitals, the same ones he showed off his skills playing the piano.

I am old enough to remember WW2, and we fought alongside Russia. The Ukraine was a hotbed of Nazi’s and it has Kept enough Nazi’s to keep it a failed country. Nazi’s never die, they should be locked away forever. Oddly enough Russia
is culturally much like America. It’s actually a Christian country, almost as much or more than the US.
