Aspartame: Decades of science point to serious health risks (includes long peer-reviewed bibliography)

Key facts about aspartame

Dozens of studies have linked the popular artificial sweetener aspartame to serious health problems, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, seizures, stroke and dementia, as well as negative effects such as intestinal dysbiosis, mood disorders, headaches and migraines.

Evidence also links aspartame to weight gain, increased appetite and obesity-related diseases. See our fact sheet: Aspartame is tied to weight gain. This evidence raises questions about the legality of marketing aspartame-containing products, such as Diet Coke, as “diet” drinks or weight-loss products.

In April 2015, US Right to Know petitioned the Federal Trade Commission and the Food and Drug Administration to investigate the marketing and advertising practices of “diet” products containing aspartame. The agencies declined to take action (see FTC response and FDA response).

In July 2023, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified aspartame as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” The World Health Organization/FAO Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives reaffirmed the acceptable daily intake of 40 mg/kg body weight. See IARC/JECFA statement.

In May 2023, the World Health Organization advised people not to consume non-sugar sweeteners for weight loss, including aspartame. The recommendation is based on a systematic review of the most current scientific evidence, which suggests that consumption of non-sugar sweeteners is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and all-cause mortality, as well as increased body weight.

Not to diminish the issue, and I hate diet Coke, that I have drank it in the past, but I do know that I believe that is trumps favorite drink. He’s doing fine by all accounts.

Interesting world in which Donald Rumsfeld shilled heavily to get Aspertame into our supermarkets and then was onboard for the Iraq invasion based on chemical weapons that Saddam might use on his own people.

The leading cause of adult mortality in Mexico is diabetes and its complications. This is largely attributed to the ‘Coca-Cola’ culture down there that worships the cane-sugar loaded fizzy beverage above all else, even cerveza. It’s consumed with every meal. If you show up to a Mexican wedding with a few cases, they’ll treat you like one of the family. It’s absolutely worshiped, and they’re dropping like flies as a result. Given all that, aspartame doesn’t seem so bad after all.

As soon as Aspartame became popular, it was being linked to cancer and other issues-I’ve avoided it and other unnatural stuff-I hadn’t heard about the weight gain thing before, but it explains some co-workers-all guys- who are always on a diet, guzzling diet Coke and never losing a pound I’ve been a total naturalist for decades-no processed food, all organic, grass fed, free range-no GMOs, no refined sugar no artificial sweeteners, etc-and every time I see info like this, I’m more than happy to be a health nut...

Correlation is not causation.

Exactly! All people who eat tomatoes eventually die. Therefore tomatoes kill.

There was a doctor that he told my grandson that aspartame was a bad thing. That was probably 20 yrs ago.

Bring back cyclamates. Most of the world has it, but US banned it on junk science 50 some years ago. My memories from before say it tasted the best of the zero calorie options and it is heat stable so can be used in cooking. Case against disproved decades ago.

Have read that aspartame kills ants. I’m not touching anything that kills such a hardy creature as an ant.

You can get soft drinks in Europe made with much safer Cyclamate, but not in the US. Follow the money on that.

You can search out and find Pepsi and Dr Pepper made with real sugar (2 liter for Dr Pepper, the 12 ounce Pepsis have seemed to have shrunk to 7 ounce cans at a higher price).

“Aspartame is tied to weight gain. “

I can’t count how many times I’ve seen fatties order double portions of everything but add a diet coke and they think that evens everything out.

I order a regular size meal with a regular coke and I’m relatively slender for my age.

The secret is burning the same amount of calories that you consume.

“All people who eat tomatoes eventually die. Therefore tomatoes kill.”
Interesting side fact. Tomatoes, being part of the nightshade family, was once considered poisonous and there forbidden.
