Former President Donald Trump said on this week’s broadcast of “Sunday Morning Futures” that the only mistake he made during his time in office was some of the people he picked to serve in his cabinet.
Anchor Maria Bartiromo asked, “Is there is anything you could look back on in 16 that you think maybe you want to do differently?”
Trump said, “The mistake would be people. I mean, I wouldn’t have put a guy like Bill Barr, and he was weak and pathetic. I wouldn’t have put Jeff Sessions. And there are some people that I wouldn’t have put in. You know, most people were good, but I had some people, we had Esper. I didn’t like him. He was incompetent. I thought we had other people I didn’t like.”
Bartiromo asked, “Why did you put them in the job then?”
Trump said, “You put somebody in, and you think they are good.”
He added, “All of a sudden, I’m the president of the United States, and it’s like a different society. I was New York, and, you know, it was a different thing. So I didn’t know people. I became president. I’m riding down Pennsylvania Avenue with our first lady. I had 250 motorcycles. I had armies. I had everything. I said, do you believe it? We’re president. Take a look. This is wild, right? But I never was involved in that.”
Bartiromo said, “So you didn’t know what to expect.”
Trump said, “Well, I didn’t know the people. I know the people now better than anybody has ever known. The people I know, the good ones, the bad ones, the dumb ones, the smart ones.”

Yea, he was outside of government and same with Manuchin and the commerce guy. Same with Betsy. It didn’t work out with Tillerson. Hindsight is 20/20. People were very happy with the Sessions pick initially, same with the Healthcare guy. Perry did well so did the environment guy. would it be realistic to have an entire cabinet of outsiders?
Trump: First Term ‘Mistake’ Was Some of the People I Picked for My CabinetAnd yet he still managed to accomplish more for America in one 4yr term than any President in your lifetime
Please l. That’s a bogus excuse. He campaigned on fighting the established, then he made Rance Priebus Chief of Staff. There were no surprises. The second he got sworn in he was 100% Jeb.
The important thing is that he has learned.
His midterm endorsements don’t inspire much confidence that Trump learned his lesson
My FRiend, you misunderstand me if you think I’m against Trump.
I love Trump. Look at my posts over the last eight years.
I was just talking about this aspect about which, thankfully, it looks like he’s learning
foad
Totally agree. Barr especially.
So, you can’t address the points? I understand, that is much of why I stopped supporting Trump. Give it some thought.
He has bot said. I think it is too early to show your cards at this time. I do not those who attack any GOP at all. Look at Christie and what he is doing.
Your characterization is unfair! The mapping between the President as a CEO and commercial CEOs is tenuous at best. In fact the only similarity might be the 3 letters.
A president has to get a nominee through the Congressional approval process if appointee going to be permanent through the term. That’s a political process, there’s no way around it! Like it or not the politics have to be played. Actually, it doesn’t matter if you don’t like it, it simply is!
Note: The above is not to be taken as an endorsement or a defense of McConnell. Its acknowledgment of fact no matter who is the Senate leader!
Maybe what Trump didn’t do was take advantage enough times of the President’s Constitutional recess appointment power? (Article II, Section 2, Clause 3 of the Constitution) I think he did it once with DOJ a Whittaker was appointed to replace Sessions. (Maybe I am remembering that wrong!) - Reagan did it 232 times, Bush II 171, & Clinton 132. Other then Whittaker (maybe?) I don’t know how many times he did it.
Don’t hire family members so you don’t end up in the position of dealing with their bad advice.
Instead of repeatedly claiming Trump can’t get to 270 how about you explain how Ronnie is going to do it...especially when he can’t win the primary dolt!
Perhaps some piss and moan, but others just want Trump to have a clear plan on how he would select staff successfully, with no more Sessions, Scaramuchis, Barrs, Wrays, etc.
Trump’s style in business was to take calculated risks (on personnel as well deals), take his lumps when necessary, jettison the duds, and move on. He thinks he can operate in a near vacuum, and does not grasp that the federal bureaucrats can stymie the President’s will, with apparent impunity — because they have set the system up to butter their own bread.
It is a major task to find capable, loyal people to leave good jobs, especially when everyone knows that the media and DoJ/FBI/CIA will do everything possible to ruin their lives. Firing existing federal employees takes an eternity. Trump will need a strategy to isolate and neutralize the Democrat operatives that make up 90% of the fed workforce.
I’m not for throwing up our hands and accepting criminal Democrat misrule, or make nice (i.e. capitulate) by sidelining Republican candidates who push back. The personnel and cleanup plans, including legislative and legal strategies that anticipate the countermeasures, need to be in place BEFORE the election.
Please name ONE PERSON THAT WAS GOOD THAT HE TURNED INTO BAD....ONE DAMN NAME!
He FREAKING KNOWS.....GEESH.
Just lock the doors!!!
Stephen. Miller is a TREASURE!
For starters, DeSantis has never lost an election. He's not mired in legal trouble. He can appeal to the swing state, independent, and small 'r' Republican voters who loath Trump while still retaining Trump's MAGA base (As Brian Kemp did, even if they're a little butthurt over it).
Indeed, the primary will be a challenge as it seems there is a significant number of Republican primary voters who no longer care about winning elections, only about "owning the Libs" --by ensuring more of them are sent to Washington.
I don't need to know DeSantis' plan because he's never lost. He was re-elected by 20 points. He flipped purple Florida crimson red. Trump, on the other hand lost the House in '18, his re-election in '20, the Senate in '21, and all of his handpicked candidates in these crucial swing states were clobbered in '22. Tell me how he's going to win!
