A flash flood on a Pennsylvania road claims 4 lives; 3 others, including a baby, are missing

WASHINGTON CROSSING, Pa. (AP) — A sudden flash flood swamped a southeastern Pennsylvania road, sweeping several cars away and claiming at least four lives. Three other people, including a 9-month-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, remained missing, authorities said.

Officials in Bucks County’s Upper Makefield Township said torrential rains occurred at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the Washington Crossing area. Other parts of the East Coast were experiencing heavy rain, including Vermont. Authorities there said landslides could become a problem on Sunday as the state copes with more rain following days of flooding.

“My team and I continue to monitor the situation as more rain falls in Vermont. There are flash flood warnings throughout the state today. Remain vigilant and be prepared,” Gov. Phil Scott said.

Fire Chief Tim Brewer told reporters that the area got about 6 1/2 to seven inches of rain (about 18 centimeters) in 45 minutes.

“In my 44 years, I’ve never seen anything like it,” he said. “When the water came up, it came up very swiftly. We do not think that anybody drove into it, that they were actively on that road when it happened.”

I believe more rain is on the way for these areas. It's best to be on high ground and stay there until the water recedes.

The rain in Maine falls mainly, well everywhere. It has been raining all day here in Maine and we have not had a dry weekend in several weeks. Not good for tourism.

Wow! We’re a little north of there and only got .9 inches last night, but it came down very fast. God be with them.

Rain here in NH is endless. Even Tornado warnings today.
Our vegi gardens are almost a total loss.

Wish we could trade some rain for the sun and heat the west is getting.

I left Maine in 1980 because there were no jobs. If you rely mainly (no pun intended) on tourism for the couple months of summer then your state and local government have failed you big time. Still have family there and I’ll be back in August for 7 days... Last time ever I hope. Beautiful state run by idiots.

I saw that warning box pup up for eastern Bucks.

We escaped the training storms...altogether from late Saturday night through today just a little over 0.2 inches.

Last Sunday evening was our turn for the 2 1/2 inches. Once was enough.

We have had more rain than usual this spring and early summer here in the south as well. I think we will get a break this coming week in that no thunderstorms are predicted for five days. In the past few weeks, we have had storms where it rained so hard that we could not see 20 feet from the front door.

I got caught in a downpour last week while on the road (the sky turned pitch black at 3:00 in the afternoon) and happened to be near our local car wash. I pulled into a bay and waited it out. The rain was coming so fast it didn’t have time to run off the road so it was much like driving upstream. The windshield wipers were useless.

My wife and I used to travel around the Bucks County area. There’s a quaint little town called New Hope in that area.

I always noticed however that the hillsides in that area are limestone and loose shale. Wash outs, mudslides and flooding is not uncommon in the area.

Poor souls.
