Ron DeSantis visits Rep. Zach Nunn’s Ankeny event
WHO 13 Des Moines ^ | July 15, 2023 | Zach Fisher

ANKENY, Iowa — The campaign train chugged along for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ presidential aspirations Saturday. DeSantis made several stops in Iowa, most notably an appearance with Rep. Zach Nunn’s event Saturday afternoon.

DeSantis appeared at the Operation: Top Nunn program at the Ankeny Regional Airport. The event honored America’s military, and DeSantis shared his concerns for the troops during the ceremony.

“We will get the political agenda out of the military and take the woke agenda out,” DeSantis told the crowd. “We will restore the military to its proper mission.”

DeSantis took questions from the media following the program and stoked a simmering feud between him and former President Donald Trump. DeSantis told a WHO 13 reporter he is frustrated with Trump’s social media post complaining about Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds’ neutrality in the caucus process.

“I just could not believe when I read that,” DeSantis said. “The number one thing that people in Iowa come up to me and shake their heads about is Donald Trump attacking Kim Reynolds. These were people who were planning on supporting [Trump] who are now not doing that. That is not the way we win as Republicans, the way to win is to unite Republicans.”

I don’t know trump’s motivations - nor the governors. I’m no mind reader.

But endorsements are not permanent.

What do you call it?

Glad you asked.

Trump simply described the time line of his endorsement of her and then the lack of her return endorsement of him. Trump then described his now neutral position on Reynolds by saying that he no longer invites her to events.

There were no naming calling or insults.

If describing Reynolds' actions sounds offensive, then her actions are.

Trump is not entitled to life-long fealty. His endorsements are not, at least publicly, tied to "you must always support me, never compete against me". Trump won in 2016. I supported him in 2016 and 2020. I only recently moved on to DeSantis, yet I still defend Trump against persecution. That said, I have always object to his quick disloyalty to people, his name calling, and bullying. He's made bad hiring picks, turns on them. The overall result, the elephant in the room, is that Trump turns nearlyy everyone against him. He blames them or others. But seriously, is and can it always be someone elses fault?

I try to be respectful of President Trump, I no longer support him, I call him out, I call out supporters. But I try not to stoop to name calling and related BS. I prefer to talk about facts, statements, relevant content.

And yes, that will come out as criticizing Trump. Politely and respectfully. I only ask that others do the same here with DeSantis and others. Don't try to be wanna be Trumps and insult everyone. There's no upside, no votes won and we do live so-to-speak in glass houses.

Just how is Governor Reynolds neutral position is offensive?

"Now, she wants to remain 'NEUTRAL.' I don’t invite her to events! Wow, that is very mature.

Demands of loyalty from Trump is comical coming from him.

President Trump’s primary flaw, at least optically, in my opinion, has been that he doesn’t deserve the loyalty of his supporters/ abandons them in unprecedented times of persecution. This was also said of Napoleon Bonaparte- we will not know the truth of this for decades most likely- but the opprobrium of the Republican establishment as saboteur and collaborator with these inherently anti-American forces cannot be forgiven- and post 2018 election Ron pretty readily revealed himself as establishment trash. Ted Cruz 2.0- but Ted was incredibly intelligent, where Ron is a mediocrity (I would guess 125 IQ- but he works hard, cant deny that). You didn’t get into Yale Law (I’d love to see what his LSAT score was- undoubtedly lower than mean) by doing anything save the status quo. He’s a striver- a tryhard.

How so, all DeSantis and others need to do is last out Trump’s self-destructive behavior. Trump is setting himself up to lose Iowa. And thereafter? And there are 50 state primaries and caucuses that don’t start for another eight months. The convention is over a year away. DeSantis and others simply need to bide their time.

That is much my point. This is destructive for Trump, for Republicans, and for the country. It is not winning him new voters, and is losing him voters. Cheating aside, Trump lost in 2020. He needs more voters to beat the cheating in 2024. That won't happen with continued behavior like this.

You're missing the point. All Trump did was describe accurately what she did. How is that offensive? He didn't insult her. He didn't bully her. He didn't call her a name.

"Now, she wants to remain 'NEUTRAL.' I don’t invite her to events! Wow, that is very mature.

What? Trump did what Reynolds did. He is no longer promoting Reynolds at events. That's his return announcement of neutrality.

You seem to be offended by Trump's statement that he will no longer be promoting Reynolds at events?

Do you think Trump owes Reynolds an invite to his promotional events?

"promoting"?

It is common for visiting politicians to invite local politicians. But setting that aside, you have to admit that the immature way he did it is a dig and criticism of Reynolds. And as the article reports, residents of Iowa are upset. That means lost voters.

"promoting"? It is common for visiting politicians to invite local politicians.

Trump uses his rallies to announce and promote politicians that he supports.

But setting that aside, you have to admit that the immature way he did it is a dig and criticism of Reynolds.

What was the "dig"? He has publicly endorsed Reynolds in the past. Now he makes it similarly public that he has gone neutral with her.

He certainly doesn't owe her an invite and a promotional appearance at his rallies.

I think that the republican establishment sees/saw DeSantis as a way to bury MAGA permanently. He’s simply a terrible campaigner, shit poor campaigner. One of the worst that I’ve ever seen running for President. They thought to themselves if we could make DeSantis the standard bearer for MAGA, Maga would be finished. So they pumped his head full of false bravado and lies and they convinced him that he is a shoe in for the nom. DeSantis is their patsy.

I don't think he's so bad. Seeing him in person, watching events online, he's good, maybe not the best staff yet. I know I'm waiting for Christina Pushaw to be shown the door. And the fact that she is still there means that he's got a poor campaign team that is not nationally experienced and savvy. At the moment, though, I don't think it matters as he's competing against Trump who because of prosecution and persecution is sucking up all the oxygen in the room. DeSantis only needs to hold on for the next eight months, do nothing stupid.

If you watch the Friday event with Tucker you'll see that DeSantis is currently the only viable candidate beyond Trump. Scott's just not there, Hutchison and Pence are disqualifyingly out of step, Ramaswamy is at best a high school debater with no life experience or authenticity. Haley is the only one with any credibility and she's an anchor baby. That leaves DeSantis, did okay, says the right things, has clear history of success, and is working hard to win. He is energetic, knowledgeable, a policy-wonk, sober. What he is not is an entertainer, which is a shadow hanging over him.
