Russia's air force 'remains largely intact,' but more jets won't fix all its problems in Ukraine, NATO commanders say

After 16 months of fighting in Ukraine, Russia's military still has nearly all of its combat aircraft, but neither Russian nor Ukrainian aircraft can control the air, the Royal Air Force's top general said Thursday.

Jets and helicopters have not disappeared from over Ukraine, but thickets of air-defense systems make the airspace inhospitable. And even though Russia has a vastly larger air force, other issues may keep it from operating effectively, according to two NATO air commanders.

In a speech at the Global Air & Space Chiefs' Conference in London on Thursday, Air Chief Marshal Rich Knighton, chief of the British air staff, said Russia's land force is now "weaker," having lost more than two-thirds of its tanks, "but the air force remains largely intact."

Knighton displayed graphics depicting both side's losses, based on assessments by British Defence Intelligence and open-source tracking website Oryx. One graphic said Russia has taken over 220,000 casualties, including 176 military pilots, and lost 162 air-defense systems. A second graphic said Russia's air force retains 96% of its 2,021 fixed-wing aircraft and 90% of its 899 helicopters...

“SUPPORT for Ukraine is SLIP-SLIDING AWAY. Slowly but surely.”

I think the aborted coup last month cost Russia more aircraft than the Ukraine War.

10 years from now, you'll be posting the same thing. And after Russia has lost the war, you'll still be posting the same thing.

So you’re figuring on a typical neocon CF lasting ten plus years. In this case you are right. Assuming the maniacs in DC don’t escalate this into WWIII, their unprovoked proxy war will most likely be generational.

OMG

Air Chief Marshal Rich Knighton, chief of the British air staff….is using ORYX data to calculate Russian losses?

Russia just rolled out a new few dozen Su-34s in a ceremony a few days ago. What is NATO talking about?

Always the same trash.

Neocon... WWIII... maniacs... escalate...unprovoked... proxy...

All the same trash meant to scare people from supporting Ukraine.

Let's see... 'generational'... sounds like what a chat-app would generate if the 'scary' words were input into the chat app and then asked to 'generate' a paragraph meant to scare people You people are so predictable, and I knew after my fist post that you would show up with your cut-and-paste response. Try a new line of attack. What you post is old and tiring and nonsensical.

The Ukrainian standoff proves the value of the F-35.

but neither Russian nor Ukrainian aircraft can control the air, the Royal Air Force's top general said Thursday.

Russia knows that. They rely on an integrated air defense with Pantsrs, S300s and S400s. The Russian capabilities in air defense and electronic warfare are a result of our startegy in the cold war to work on their paranoia regaring air attack. It worked. They bankrupted themselves and collapsed losing the cold war. But they did retain an exceptionally good integrated air defense capability. Fools.

Ten years from now, EVERY inch of annexed territory will remain part of Russia Federation and likely more than that.

You and your ilk are joke. We've six weeks of Ukrainian offensive that has cost 26,000 lives and has yet to reach the first line of Russian defensive. WHAT ABOUT THAT AND THE FACT UKRAINE HAS ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE OF GAINING ANY TERRITORY BACK don't you understand?

You're a dangerous fool.

I would suggest you aske the Ghost of Kiev how succesful he has been in penetrating Russian air defenses.

A lot of folks were kind of supprised that the Russians aren't just using Cold War junk and have been making a few upgrades - you know like their EW capabilites and the S400.

https://www.oryxspioenkop.com/2022/03/list-of-aircraft-losses-during-2022.html

At last count Ruzzia has lost 450 aircraft. There are no indications that any of these aircraft have been replaced.

FOUR. Four aircraft. Not ‘dozens’.

https://www.jpost.com/international/article-745424

“The number of aircraft transferred has yet to be disclosed, but it may be a total of four.”

Ten years from now, EVERY inch of annexed territory will remain part of Russia Federation and likely more than that. Wishing ti won't make it happen. Russia lost the war from the beginning, since the only outcome from the war is a loss for Russia. Russia will not be allowed to win anything, not even and inch of territory, and they are likely to end up even losing Crimea. Putin bit into a lot more than he can chew. It's only a matter of time. Don't you understand what losing means? Your side is losing, now iand in the end.
