The VodkaPundit Review of 'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One'
PJ Media ^ | 12 July2023 | Stephen Green

Posted on 07/12/2023 1:40:20 PM PDT by Rummyfan

My wife, teenage sons, and I returned home last night from a packed preview showing of the inelegantly named “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” and we were all smiles. The short version is: This is a perfect summer popcorn flick. Continue on for the slightly longer review with only the tiniest of spoilers that you might already have gotten from the trailer.

The movie makes us wait before seven-time star Tom Cruise emerges from the shadows as superspy Ethan Hunt. The action, however, kicks off right away on board an undetectable Russian attack submarine somewhere in the Barents Sea. It’s there we learn that the sub’s “brain” is a militarized artificial intelligence that might be playing mind games with its own crew.

Without giving too much away, the AI — later known as “the Entity” — escapes. Everybody from national governments to a gorgeous arms dealer (yes, the delectable Vanessa Kirby is back as the White Widow) believes they can use the Entity to serve their own ends — right down to the ability to “control the truth.” That particular theme is very much on-point in today’s world of Orwellian social media controls.

There’s also a shadowy figure from Hunt’s past who has other plans for the Entity. Hunt, of course, wants to destroy the thing.

Maverick is on Prime now which I have for free shipping and football so I’ll just watch that instead of the high dollar theater hassle

Saw the trailer yesterday when we went to the theater to see Sound of Silence.

Told hubby and son I want to see that.

So few good movies made these days, this one looks good.

I am going tonight to see this. I saw Indiana Jones on Monday and actually liked it. I will say this, if Tom Cruise had been producing Indiana Jones 5 it would have been a much better film.

The ratings are very high.
I just don’t want to support hollywood with any money.
I was thinking of seeing sound of freedom though

MI will probably be available to stream by December. I’ll try to wait, but the wife is a big Tom Cruise fan, so she might make me take her out. Maverick was a fun flick. Cruise is crushing it at the box office.

My sentiments exactly. Cruise is one of the only Hollyweird stars left who still makes movies that people want to see, rather than movies designed to placate the LGBTQIA2S+ crowd and to instruct audiences on how woke they should be.

I hate how they killed off Phelps in the original.

And made him the bad guy. Tom ruined MI for me then. They are just typical action pictures with ridiculous plots.

IMF was never a government agency.

Cruise has also smartened up enough to keep his politics away from his paycheck.

I would argue that without Cruise, big picture Hollywood is dead. We saw Top Gun Maverick & that rocked. See a couple other movies in the theater and they sucked. May have as well watched on Netflix.

The whole point of MI was the team. Instead w/ Cruise, "It's all about Meeeeeeee".

I honestly admire him for his unfliching dedication to his work.

Kevin Costner is equally focused.

Who knows? At least they killed off Alec Baldwin’s character two flicks ago.

The only two movies I’ve seen in a theater the last couple years are No Time to Die and Top Gun:Maverick. Wanted to say goodbye to Daniel Craig and wanted to see TG:M on a big screen.
