Matt Gaetz leads charge to let FISA expire, end illegal surveillance of US citizens

A group of House Republicans is urging Congress not to renew the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) when it expires at the end of this year, a move those lawmakers say would curb the government’s ability to spy on U.S. citizens.

"I think most folks are increasingly concerned about centralized power with our national security apparatus, given how political they've become," Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., who will introduce a resolution Tuesday calling for an end to FISA, told Fox News Digital.

(snip)

Section 702 of FISA allows surveillance of non-U.S. citizens overseas, and when U.S. citizens are flagged in these investigations, the FBI takes over and can run a query on them for possible security issues.

But the FBI admitted in May that it improperly used warrantless search procedures on Americans more than 278,000 times in 2021, including Jan. 6 protesters and George Floyd demonstrators. The FBI has said it has taken steps to ensure this "unacceptable" surveillance does not continue, but Gaetz and his supporters say the best move is to eliminate FISA altogether.

The bots at Yahoo are already on it, spewing garbage, hoping to distract/bury the (very important) issue at hand.
Seems to happen any time something impacting the abuses of the Deep State comes up, doesn't it?

This is why they like to do omnibuses, so that all this stuff is renewed and fully funded.

Do we really believe that letting this law die will change anything?

Watch all the Dems who used to “oppose” this, vote for this thing.

While just enough Collaborator Republicans join them to get it passed.

And the other Collaborator Repubs will suddenly “oppose” this, after voting for it for 20 years.

I’m not someone who gambles, but I’d bet the farm nothing is going to change the current FISA scheme.

The Swamp wants this, so blocking it must mean something.

If this really happens, it would be the first blow struck to restore a small amount of lost freedom in almost a century...

"I’m not someone who gambles, but I’d bet the farm nothing is going to change the current FISA scheme."

Probably not. At least until its used against the "wrong people".

Brings to mind an old 'Babylon 5' episode where a union negotiator invoked a labor law, thinking it would be used to crush the workers, only to get turned around on him with the comment "never hand someone a loaded gun unless you're sure where he's going to point it"

Anyone who thinks the law will stop the surveillance state is delusional.

Yeah. There would no longer be a FISA court to seek their hidden actions from the public. They would have to get warrants without a public review.

.
It’ll be the six Republicans that want to change the Corrupt system.

It’ll be saved - and once it’s saved - Repubs can safely vote to let it expire (meaningless Votes).

I’ve watched the meetings - and they love it, but have to act as if they’re bothered by it’s abuses (which is SOP).

Deep State Wins

I applaud the effort, but you need to get rid of five eyes as well. Five eyes has been weaponized to workaround internal surveillance restrictions.

I applaud the effort, but you need to get rid of Five eyes as well.

Start out by eliminating N. Zealand from 5Eyes.

If Australia/Canada continue to be more fascist and anti America, drop them.

The UK will become more Muslim in each year. London is close to being a Muslim controlled city.

Harry Truman did not want the OSS to continue post WWII.

So, he and the other leaders created the 5Eyes and NATO. Our world has changed since the end of WWII.

FISA hasn’t helped us in decades. So drop it.

Like that’s going to stop the USSA government from spying. Where’s the punishment for those who have already abused the FISA court?
