‘Doom-and-gloom’ climate news can increase people’s fear over what’s coming, but it may also spark audiences to consider what society can do to fix the problem, a new study has found.
The research, published in the journal Climate Change last week, exposed a group to seven consecutive days of negative climate change news stories posted to Twitter. Those participants were only shown news headlines appearing from outlets like BBC News, National Public Radio (NPR) and the Associated Press.
One negative headline read “Climate change: Summers could become ‘too hot for humans,’” together with an image of a melting Earth glowing red and emitting smoke. “Climate change: Summers could be warmer than usual for many,” read the low-threat version with a generic image of the Earth.
Participants were asked to rank the emotions they felt while reading the tweet on an 11-point scale. A follow-up survey also assessed their fear and hope levels, as well as how much they thought climate posed a personal threat to them and whether they felt they could do something about it.
The results showed fear peaked after around six exposures over a few days before holding steady.
Over time, repeated exposure to the threatening headlines led people to feel they could do more to influence how humanity could steer itself away from the worst dangers of global warming. They also reported feeling the issue of climate change was more important.

ROTFLMAO...uh, no.
Makes me roll my eyes.
It motivates me to expose the fraud of the Population Control crowd attempting to get you to give up your freedom.
It bores me.
Same for me.
Boy, that Goebbels guy sure gets around. < G!>
I’m bored by it too.
Are we motivated or paralyzed? Those are the only two choices?
How about the reaction, of not this (fill in the blank) again?
How about a reaction, of just ignoring it because they shove it down our throats so much we don’t pay attention anymore?
Neither. I know better.
I ignore the climate hysteria and go on with my life.
It makes me want to hunt down those climate commie cultists and wear their skins. I hear their skin is eco friendly….
Wind, solar, and hydro are not going to be enough. Period!
Pisses me off!
algore, J F'ing Kerry, et al. and the morons that echo and hang on their every word, only promote climate change for self aggrandizement and personal gain.
“.. ‘doom-and-gloom’ climate news...” ? Not sure what that means since I’m pretty darn sure all humans can do is screw things up by pretending we can control weather/climate. Hey, I know. Let’s shoot a bunch of reflective particles into the atmosphere to reflect some of the solar energy reaching the erf. What could possibly go wrong? Dumbassery writ large.
It bores me, as the truth of the matter is that our world has at the very least 1007 more years, likely way more. 7 years of tribulation, the 1000 year reign of Christ.
The doom and gloom charlatans want everyone to believe man is destroying the planet. We are not. Our measly co2 co tribution is nowhere near enough to do anything to the climate. Zero, zilch.
The world may buy into the lie of climate change, but the bible is clear- our planet will be fine until it gets destroyed by God- not us! And that is at least 1007 more years from now
I check my LOCAL weather, pray for much needed rain these days, then grab the hose and water what needs a drink...while other parts of the country are either on fire or drowning in floodwaters. *ROLLEYES*
I mean, what CAN I do about it? Send more money to Mother Government? Eat bugs for supper? Not.
*SMIRK*
When all the ‘smarter than me’ Movie Stars sell their planes and yachts and jump on the bus for their transport and when NASCAR stops racing, THEN I’ll MAYBE pay a little bit of attention to this manufactures Ponzi Scheme.
But probably not. ;)
It does neither for me. I just go on living my life as before their prognostications.
I have been through so many “environmental scares” I cannot count them all. I do know it’s well over 20. Global cooling/new ice age, dioxin, acid rain, etc. etc. etc.
Every single one has been an huge exaggeration, a lie, or otherwise unfounded.
As Phil Collins so eloquently sang: “I don’t care any more.”
