GOP can’t go back to 2018 to dodge fallout of their abortion ban
Iowa Capital Dispatch ^ | 7/10/23 | Kathie Obradovich

What Iowa GOP lawmakers and Gov. Kim Reynolds are planning to do in Tuesday’s special session may have started out as the most politically expedient course of action on abortion – but it could backfire in a spectacular way.

Here’s why.

Reynolds and the GOP majority under the golden dome are coming back into session at the cost of tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars to try again to pass a law banning most abortions after roughly six weeks of gestation.

No matter what they pass, this law is going straight back to court, at the cost of potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars for litigation, again at the expense of taxpayers. Its ultimate fate will not be decided before the Legislature’s regular session in January. In fact, it probably won’t be decided before the 2024 elections.

By all appearances, the GOP majority will make no substantial effort to make this new law more acceptable to the court or less punitive for the childbearing people of Iowa. The legislation introduced Friday was essentially the so-called “fetal heartbeat” law passed in 2018 – with one very important, and I think largely overlooked, exception. I’ll get to that in a minute

This is exactly what the DEMs will run on in 2024 in order to retake the House. Abortion. Moderate and even some “conservative” women will vote to make abortion legal.

The left sees abortion as a political issue so they criticize or mock the right for making a political “mistake” or miscalculation on the issue.

You have the perfect screen name, like a cat you are moody, brooding, and scratch at anything you disagree with.

J guess you dismiss the hundreds of thousands that show up every January 22nd, for "The March for Life".

They did it last year and we won the house. States that passed 6 week and 15 week bans gained. All it takes is clearly communicating the right message and it is a winner. Run and hide and get crushed by propaganda.

“But lawmakers, if they were really intent on restricting abortion, would face better odds if they rewrote this law to make it more constitutionally solid based on the example of other states “

Excuse me, but Dobb’s pretty much made it clear, there is no constitutional right to abortion, period. 12, 15, 30 weeks all make no difference.

The constitution is mute on this topic, therefore any court declaring any law banning or allowing abortion “unconstitutional” is a joke. Unless of course the state’s constitution would have some provision in it regarding this topic.

Otherwise the court is not following the constitution, by declaring abortion or the ban their of “unconstitutional”

I think Trump has the right idea on this. Of you say 3 weeks no exceptions you’re going to lose. You have to find out where most people are on it...and they say, but the Rats want it st 9 months and then make the question be should abortion at 9 months be legal. That’s, politically, how to play this. You could probably realistically get most people to agree to no abortions after the first trimester unless the mothers health is endangered (in which case the argument is about which life to preserve).

This legislature needs to add a rider in the event of a court action that invalidates it. The rider should provide that a male (impregnator) may disclaim parentage up to the date provided by the court for lawful abortions. Under the same free-range rules for women, men will likewise be provided relief from unwanted pregnancies.

At least there will no longer be an incentive for women to expect support payments from unlucky one-night stands. More care may go into their sexual activities.

Good. We are the anti-slavery party. We need to stick to principles. Babies are not sub humans that we can destroy at will.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

There is no GOP abortion ban. The Supreme Court sent the issue back for the states to decide and there will still be many states where it's legal and probably even more available than before the decision.

This is how the issue will be presented by the leftist media and the Dim party to stir up as much pro-abortion, anti-Republican sentiment as possible.

Only heathens will vote for abortion on demand, it really has nothing to do with being moderate or conservative.

One is either a heathen or not. It takes a heathen to believe mothers murdering their innocent defenseless children on a any whim should be legal.

If the last such law was pased in 2018, and the Supremes removed all enforcement obstacles, then why is a new law needed? Eforce the 2018 law.

I guess these people didn’t pay attention to the supreme court’s recent ruling on abortion-they said it is not the feds’ business, let each state decide-so if Iowa votes to allow the killing of unborn babies, that is up to them-don’t bitch at the states that decided to give unborn humans a chance to live-it is none of yfb...

There is no ban on kid murdering, it just up to kid friendly or kid hating states to define their own laws.
