Fearful Germany preparing to block Ukraine’s Nato membership bid
The Telegraph via Yahoo ^ | July 8th, 2023 | Joe Barnes

Posted on 07/09/2023 9:00:07 AM PDT by Mariner

Germany is set to insist on delaying Ukraine’s accession to Nato over fears the move could take the alliance to war with Russia.

An alliance source said Berlin would use the annual Nato summit in Vilnius, Lithuania this week to urge others to focus on security assurances, rather than membership proposals, to help Ukraine defend itself in the absence of accession.

“Berlin is stand-offish at the prospect of offering immediate membership,” the source told The Telegraph. “It wants a process and time to develop guarantees to essentially block membership.”

“Berlin doesn’t want to see Vladimir Putin potentially test Article 5.”

Under Nato’s alliance’s Article 5 clause, any member state attacked by an outside aggressor has the right to request military intervention from the rest of the allies.

Appearing to echo German concerns Joe Biden said he wanted to avoid a situation where “we’re all in the war, we’re in a war with Russia.”

Mr Biden added that Ukraine was “not ready” for Nato membership, and that it was “going to take a while”.

His national security adviser Jake Sullivan said: “We are not seeking to start World War Three. Ukraine will not be joining Nato coming out of this summit.”

For some reason the small NATO countries are anxious for Ukraine to join NATO asap.

The larger countries are opposed.

No matter the outcome of the current war, Ukraine will NEVER BE A MEMBER OF NATO. Because the big NATO countries know that means nuclear war with Russia, and Ukraine is just not worth that.

No country in Eastern Europe is. None east of the Rhine.

I would like to see ANY POTUS or POTUS candidate give a speech saying why existential war is the proper course to protect the borders of Bulgaria, Romania. Macedonia, Lithuania etc.

The US has no REAL interests in most of the NATO countries (31 of them) and therefore they are fools to rely on Article 5 to protect them when the chips are down.

I suspect that the Neocons will tell Germany to get in line, or they’ll blow up more of their energy infrastructure.

...and Germany now knows that their threats are legitimate.

Allowing entry now would be a declaration of war against Russia. If we really want that should just launch the nukes now.

No country in Eastern Europe is. None east of the Rhine.

No country anywhere in Europe is. It's a one-sided, useless relationship and has been for years.

As a practical matter, nearly all western European countries are progressively failing and becoming weak, woke $**tholes in self-destruct mode.

They won't have the *means to help us when we need them.

Germany preparing to block Ukraine’s Nato membership bid

I can understand that, Ukraine is not nearly Nazi or Radical Muslim enough, by Germany's standards, to join NATO.

I wonder if this USA caused tension would dissolve if the Z-man got snuffed out . Is there a BidenNazi Boi to fill the CIA's Ukraine terrorist position ?

with The US crime syndicate out of the way , the good people of Ukraine might have peace again for a while .

they keep doubling down on forcing Russia to wipe them out. So far restraint and all attempts by Russia to negotiate has not been working.

Zelensky is the "Yaasir Arrafat" of Ukraine with a policy of" no negotiation, russia must be wiped off the map" attitude

“Why doesn’t the title say US or US and Germany?”

Because the rest of NATO wants to isolate the US politically, but they have to bring over Germany first.

They are not our friends or allies.

They are parasites sucking our life’s blood.

Dialing the clock back, Chancellor Merkel opposed fast-tracking Ukraine for NATO membership. She said it would provoke Russia. Like Neville Chamberlain, she bought peace in our time. Now, we - the U.S. primarily - are dealing with the mess.

Germany hasn’t met its NATO obligation in years. Why should it even have a vote?

Germany is in the arms business in order to sell arms. Not for its national defense or for NATO. It expects the United States to defend iGermaany and the Poles to provide its strategic depth.

To illustrate the pathetic condition of Germany’s military, it has six (coastal defense) submarines. But, look at how many it has that are operational:

https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/navy-ships/a14480191/germanys-entire-submarine-fleet-is-out-of-commission/

Germany has 328 Main Battle Tanks (Leopard tanks) in service. In comparison, the U.S. has 2,509 MBTs (Abrams tanks). To its credit, Germany has been transferring MBTs in storage to Ukraine (in some cases indirectly, by replacing transfers of other countries. This is better than nothing. But, Germany is easily capable of more.

It’s not a bad thing that Germany has gone wimp on us, a combination of guilt for WWII, and no longer being on the front line. Hopefully, one day Germany will take its place among the democratic countries of the world (like we’re seeing happen in Japan). But, until Germany takes its place, it should not have a veto power in NATO.

” But, until Germany takes its place, it should not have a veto power in NATO.”

If Germany doesn’t veto it, the US will.

Because it’s stupid.

It’s a bad idea..i’m surprised the enemies within are not all for it? Or, are they pretending not to be for it?

Damn

and even Biden has the fifth column deep state backing him and Kamala in line for first puppet

it was actually Kamalla who started spouting off to join NATO at the first peace talks which cause Putin to snap

so I suppose Russia may be forced to bring out the air assets and flatten Ukraine (like how Clinton carpet bombed Yogoslavia ) while engaging in an air battle with the USA after all (way more likely than the nuclear option).

big difference is , Russia will not have the luxury of media cover-up of the attrocities like Clinton and Obama did, they will accuse Russia of war crimes for doing much less "collateral damage" than the USA has been committing in helping NATO rob and loot all these decades

“such action as it deems necessary”

These are the weasel words in Article 5. If SHTF it will be us and maybe the Poles and a Brit brigade. Everyone else will sit it out.

I think the rule says you can’t join if you’re already at war.

Part of me would like to see the US in an existential war just to see how our woke armed forces perform and, to laugh at the draft dodgers who can’t claim to be homos, trainers, fat, etc.

The only thing that could get one
booted is being a white nationalist.

Yes, any future Ukrainian membership of NATO would have to be debated after the current war is over.
